Airport Luggage Theft Operation – How to Protect Your Belongings

Inside the home of a pair of airport luggage thieves were, “suitcases everywhere – from floor to ceiling…everywhere!” That’s the word from the Phoenix Police Department after they busted the bad guy and gal in a surveillance airport sting. The sting led to the findings of literally thousands of suitcases and bags, so say the police. Here’s how it all went down.
For nearly a month investigators were trying to solve the case of an unusual amount of missing luggage at the Shy Harbor Airport in Phoenix. Hundreds of reports were being filed with the airlines, but the luggage was never recovered. Then, 3 weeks after the initial alert, a Phoenix police officer with the department’s Sky Harbor Airport Bureau noticed suspicious behavior near one of the airport’s luggage carousels. The officer first noticed the suspect, 62 year old Keith King approach the airport carousel from outside the terminal and followed him to the parking lot. Phoenix police spokesperson Detective James Holmes in a press release said, “The officer was able to determine that he [King] did not come from a current flight and yet he had removed baggage from that flight’s carousel.” Officers reviewed airport surveillance video and determined that Mr. King was possibly involved in stealing baggage on more than that occasion. Meanwhile, King was released from jail on his own recognizance, but he didn’t leave too scared of law enforcement. That’s because the following week King was spotted again arriving at the airport where he proceeded to head for the luggage carousels. The sting team then followed King back to his car with yet again luggage that did not belong to him. The authorities then tailed him to his home where they executed a search warrant.
When police entered the home they found what is estimated to be around 1,000 suitcases and bags which they believe were stolen on similar runs to the airport. King and his 38 year old wife, Stacy, were then arrested. Later, investigators interviewed neighbors of the couple, who commented that the pair would have routine weekend yard sales and there were always suitcases being sold, which they thought to be odd. The pair now faces charges of theft and burglary. Some victims of the stolen luggage have been identified, but the investigation will be ongoing as police attempt to identify massive amounts of stolen goods.
This story obviously highlights the issue of airport security. When you travel there are many things to consider, especially when it comes to security. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or first timer, security should always be on your mind, even before you ever get to the airport. Remember, before you leave the house you should pack your valuables in your carry-on. This means jewelry, cameras, laptops, and other electronics. If you absolutely can’t part with something then don’t put it in a luggage that you will be checking in. Second, be sure to clearly mark your luggage and know exactly what it looks like. The more obvious your suitcase is to you, the quicker you can locate it and retrieve it.
