5 Tips for Staying Safe at Home

As crime rates continue to rise throughout the nation, home safety is of particular concern. Whether consumers have a home security system or not, there are certain precautions and habits that will decrease their risk of having a home break in. Pinnacle Security recently released a press release in which they recommended that consumers follow 5 Tips for staying safe at home. Here are the tips –

1. Keep lights in all entrances with interior controls and have good locks on all doors and windows.
2. Do not list your full name on your mailbox or in phone directories; use just your first initial and last name.
3. Know which neighbors you can trust in an emergency and discuss emergency procedures with your children. (For example – If there’s an emergency and I can’t help you, run directly to the Jacksons’ house.)
4. Never open the door to a stranger. If a stranger asks to use a phone, offer to make the call for them. Do not let him/her inside.
5. Do not hide keys in obvious places. Home break-ins are often made easier by an accessible hide-a-key.

Bill Reynolds of Pinnacle Security also suggested, “There are a few additional concerns that pop up when a family is out of town. If possible you should set both lights and a radio or two on a timer. Noise is a huge deterrent to burglars who want to get in and get out without detection. And, of course, stop all mail and newspaper deliveries to your home while you’re away.”
