According to marketing expert, Regis McKenna, who helped launch Apple computer, “Marketing is everything and everything is marketing.” And it’s true! The success of your business depends on how well you market your product or service. That’s when the public decides if you and your company are tough or just plain wimpy. The same is true when it comes to home security. Marketing and intimidation are everything. You need to market to a potential burglar to stay away and your message needs to be loud and clear. Posting signs like: “Beware of Dog,” “This house is secured by NORCO ALARMS,” and “No Trespassing” are sure ways to intimidate a would be thief.
Security signs are designed to tell intruders that you have a home security system protecting your home. This should make them think twice before they try and break in to your house. Even if you don’t have an alarm, it is recommended that you post signs. You should post warning signs at all of the entries of your home. You should also place stickers on all your doors and windows, including on the second floor. Burglars are looking for an easy target and will normally pass up a home or business that advertises that an alarm system is present.
You can buy a variety of security signs on-line and at some hardware stores. Heck, you can even make your own! Most of the signs that you buy are bright and clear to read. These signs can be used at a business, home, hotel, or apartment. Some signs displays read:
- Restricted Area: Monitored by Video
- Warning: Neighborhood Watch
- Private Property: Violators will be Prosecuted
Even signs such as “No loitering,” “No Soliciting,” and “Private Driveway” can be intimidating.
If the security signs start to get worn out then you should replace them. You want the signs to always out stand out and be very noticeable to thieves. Signs designed for your home vary in size from around 3 x 3 inches to 11 x 11 inches. Most signs are weatherproof.
You can buy the security signs with aluminum stands or with no aluminum stands depending on how you want them to fit into the ground. It is recommended that you bury the sign post two to three feet into the ground. Yet some sign salespeople will tell you that the average sign is buried 18 inches into the ground. The basic rule of thumb is, the bigger the sign, the deeper the hole.
But what about at night? While most burglaries happen during the day when you are not home, a great deal of break-ins happen at night. So your alarm system can be seen at night it might not be a bad idea to light up your security sign. One product is called LiteWatch. It’s a solar light that can brighten up your security sign at night and costs just under $10. The same company produces yard signs that glow in the dark, a batch of those is about $30. Both products and other signs can be bought at the Home Security Store and Norco Alarms.

Thanks for the advice. I had an alarm system for years but I never had the signs or any stickers. Not sure what I was thinking! Security is heavily documented at my house now!
The yard security sign is the best advertisement for the home owner, because the sign communicates to a potential burglar that this house is protected. Since most criminals are opportunistic and will gravitate to the path of lest resistance. These home thieves’s will not attempt a B&E because of the security devices in situ in a home. Most burglars’ do not want to be caught they will move on to a home that does not have a security system.
The yard security sign is not only a good thing for the home owner, but is also a great advertising tool for the security installer or dealer.
The question should be asked; what makes the yard security sign beneficial to the security dealer?
The answer is the cost of the yard security sign as an advertising tool is much less expensive than other forms of advertisements. Most yard security lawn signs purchased in bulk may cost on average for 1 or 2 colors from $1.95 each on the high end to a middle price of .99each. (Note quantity and number of colors makes the price higher or lower) If a yard security sign is placed in front yard of a house and visible from the street the typical yard security sign is in place for 3 years. If we include the stake and attachments to affix the sign to the aluminum stake the sign would cost using the highest price point 2 colors purchasing 125 signs approximately $2.95each not including the labor attach to sign to the pole or to place the sign in the ground.
For each yard security sign placed in front of a client’s home for a period of 3 years the advertising cost per day based on the above cost for each sign is $.0027cents per day. The yearly cost of this advertising piece is $.99cent per year and the total 3 year cost would be $2.95 for the entire 3 years of advertising exposure. Of course if more signs are purchased and the unit price of each sign would be lower, then the advertising investment would be much lower.
The cost of other forms of advertising such as yellow page, radio and magazines are significantly higher. This is why the lowly yard security sign is used by most every security dealers and installers in the home security industry. There are no other advertising mediums that are more cost effective that the yard security signs for the burglar alarm industry.
Even the very large and well funded companies who sell and install burglar alarms systems have the means to use many different types of media advertising. Even these companies see the value of using the yard security sign as an additional way to communicate brand awareness.
So for the small entrepreneur who is not well funded the yard security sign and the window decal becomes a very important way to advertise their services. The beauty of this that most customers who purchase a home or business security system demand that the installing company, also install window decals and yard security signs.
For a business the best way to increase your sales is through referrals, from current customer. The yard security sign is not only a deterrent to would-be burglars, but also is referral because the home owner is advertising your service for you.
