Preventing Shoplifting in Your Small Business

Shoplifting can result in a significant loss of revenue of small businesses, and particularly for those in the retail sector. However, there are several steps you can take to prevent shoplifting from occurring on your premises.
Rearrange Your Inventory – by arranging your stock in such a way that you can easily see shoplifters, you can discourage shoplifting. Avoid having small items clustered away from the main counter, and put valuable items in locked cases.
Let shoplifters know you’re watching them – strategically position small convex mirrors around your shop. Also put up signs notifying patrons that they are being watched by a security camera. Ensure that any security cameras are visible to customers, as the knowledge that they’re being monitored can deter potential thieves.
Be vigilant – ask your employees to greet each patron as they enter the store, as thieves will feel anxious about being identified if they commit a crime. Have your staff watch for any individuals who may be wandering aimlessly about the shop or acting suspiciously, as well as individuals wearing baggy clothing such as large coats. Train your staff members to be wary of potential diversions, as these are often used to distract staff while merchandise is stolen.
Taking these simple steps can help prevent shoplifting in your small business.

This is very good info, Ron. Thanks for sharing.
One thing I would add is that leaders of small businesses also need to be aware of theft that can occur from within. This includes everything from office supplies, to intellectual property maintained on the company’s computer network. I wrote a blog post on how a workplace culture of open communication and soliciting worker feedback often can help deter this that your readers might find helpful: http://bit.ly/cgBP7S
