Ways to Improve Family Safety at Home

Family safety is a top priority for most people and the family home is where you and your family spend most of your time – so you want to ensure that it’s as safe as possible by taking measures to improve your home security.

Ensure that your family home is well lit, and that views of the front and back yards aren’t obscured by trees or other items. Greater visibility will help you monitor any children, as well as deterring burglars or vandals. Consider installing security lights or even security alarms in these areas for greater security.

Ensure that your home is fitted with high quality door and window locks, and that these are locked when not in use, or when you’re away from the home. After all, having high quality locks is only useful if they’re actually used. Never leave spare keys where they can be found: give one to a trusted neighbor instead.

Consider installing high quality driveway fences, as well as video intercoms and surveillance cameras around front entrances. These allow you to verify who is trying to enter your property. Consider also placing security cameras towards the rear of your house, as this is where most burglars gain entry.

Prepare emergency evacuation plans and ensure that emergency contact numbers are placed near any telephones. Also educate your family about safety and security measures such as pool safety and stranger danger, as improved awareness can improve family safety.
