Haiti Today

Haiti is a well known country today. Not because of any good reason about its culture or any outstanding report of its progress and development, but because the greatest Earthquake of all time had shaken this part of the world on Tuesday 12 January 2010 , that completely destroyed Haiti.

The maximum loss of life has been witnessed by the people of Haiti on the day of earthquake but after the earthquake things went even worse. Those survived were seriously injured, hungry and homeless. Help reached Haiti but it was not in time, and that is obvious. Today Haiti is being helped by different countries and organizations.

An emergency fund launched by ‘International Aid Community’ within days has covered more than 95% of its $577m target. Now there is an emergency to fulfill the basic needs of the people in Haiti because the rainy season and then the hurricane season is approaching fast. If the people of Haiti are not provided aid in these few days they will fall into worst living conditions again.

Humanitarian agencies have estimated stock supplies for the first six months; the stock includes food, emergency shelter, health, agriculture etc. Millions of dollars have been raised by the governments, organizations and individuals. Providing shelter is again a challenging task in Haiti. There are around 1.1 million homeless people.

The temporary camps have been set around the Port-au-Prince and other affected areas. Around 272,000 people are being provided with some kind of emergency shelter so far. Sanitation is now becoming one of the major concerns at Haiti, as in rainy season and in the current prevailing conditions there are chances that people may be down with malaria and dengue.

The hygiene project is providing safe drinking water to more than 911, 200 people every day, through water tankers and water treatment plants at 300 sites across Port au Prince, Leogane and Jacmel. The aim here is to provide drinking water to 1.1 million people everyday
