Single largest security issue that the world faces

Iran has been a defiant nation. Last year the country witnessed a lot of turbulence, because of post election violence. There were massive agitations after the general elections with protestors claiming that they were rigged, and that re-elections be held. But, even though the nation was going through turmoil, their nuclear program was growing fast. When confronted by the key leaders of the Iran maintained a defiant stance.

The controversy in the Iran nuclear program started when the Iranian government failed to declare sensitive enrichment activities to the IAEA. Enrichment can be used for making uranium fuel which is required for making weapons of mass destruction. The program was completed in absolute secrecy because of constant pressure from the United States. Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has maintained that their nuclear fuel enrichment program is for peaceful purposes only. Nuclear fuel uranium needs to be enriched by 5% to be used as fuel for peaceful purposes. But, the President also boasted that they can increase the enrichment ability and will not bow down to the pressure from the western powers.

The USA and the other western powers are against the Middle Eastern country’s enrichment program. After the IAEA carried out its investigations its findings suggested that Iran’s nuclear program was expanding. It also stated that Iran had shown a complete disregard for the nuclear proliferation treaty. The USA was willing to offer Iran a bargain. They offered them long term arrangements for aid that would help Iran with its economic and overall development. Iran refused such offers saying that it could not depend on such agreements. The nuclear program as Iran put it was crucial for their long term security energy. Thirteen countries have the nuclear fuel enrichment and reprocessing ability. The international community feels that many irresponsible nations might be helped Iran to get a start to their nuclear ambitions. After Iran’s refusal to shut down its fuel enrichment operations, the USA has placed sanctions on Iran. Currently the US senate is coming up with even heavier sanctions to discourage Iran.

The Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim expressed his concerns over Iran. He said that he was against sanctions being imposed on Iran, but Iran should assure the world of its peaceful intentions. The Israeli Defence minister Barak on the other hand suggests that being patient with Iran can have grave consequences. Meanwhile the US readies itself to impose a back breaking embargo on Iran. It can be said with a great deal of certainty that this is the single largest security issue that the world faces.
