Surveillance Camera Costs

Between 1999 and 2003, the United Kingdom, which is one of the biggest users of CCTV cameras, had already spent more than 170 million pounds. Moreover, almost three-fourths of their entire crime prevention budget is spent on purchasing CCTV cameras.

It turns out, though, that it’s not only governments that are spending on surveillance equipment. According to ABI Research, companies that manufacture various kinds of surveillance devices such as cameras and computers can expect an increase in revenue in the coming years, as much as $46 billion by year 2013. Furthermore, among the buyers are businesspersons and homeowners who want to secure their investments and even their own lives.

The price of surveillance cameras can definitely vary. Usually, if you’re not purchasing a system and only opting for individual cameras, you would likely spend at most $250. It gets higher depending on the nature or the feature of the surveillance equipment. For instance, CCTV is one of the most expensive you’ll ever going to get because it has to be attached to a monitor, where you can catch the live feed. If there’s an extra DVR needed, the cost of the surveillance camera can balloon to $800.

A typical hidden camera or nanny camera will cost you not less than $300 but hopefully no more than $500. If the cameras can perform a number of motions, including zoom and pan, it may increase to threefold.

One of the things that can increase the price of the surveillance camera will be the installation and the cabling. If you have been buying parts and accessories individually, you can spend around $1,000 for every small camera that you’re going to install in your property. It can go as high as $5,000 if you are going to include computer screens and DVRs.

Ways on Reducing Costs

Fortunately, there is a variety of methods to reduce the amount of money you spend on your surveillance equipment. First, know what you need. If it’s simply a garage or the yard that you’re trying to monitor, there’s no need to install a CCTV camera. An IP camera allows you to keep track of your home or office remotely or through the World Wide Web.

It also pays if you can compare the prices. A lot of sellers have their own respective suppliers. Thus, you can find varied prices of surveillance cameras in the market today. You can try “window-shopping” online before you can make your final choice.

See if you can go cheap by hiring an installation expert. Doing so will eliminate the chances of committing mistakes, which can only alleviate the total costs you pay.

Do pay attention to newer security technologies available. For example, businesses in New Zealand are able to reduce the costs of their security by employing IP cameras called Mobotix Q24. This dome-like camera that is attached to the ceiling has capabilities that are equivalent to 4 typically installed cameras.

Because of the crime rates, it does pay to seriously consider putting up surveillance equipment. However, while you’re at it, know how much you’re willing to spend for the system.
