It is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year. Children all over the world express love for their mothers in a special way on this special day. Mothers after all, are the most important person’s in everybody’s life. Mothers love and affection is very important for every child. Mothers raise their children so that they can be happy and successful in their lives. Nobody can make as many sacrifices as a mother can.

On the occasion of mother’s day the 11th annual Save the Children Index survey was conducted. Its purpose was to find out which countries were best for Mothers and Children. The survey was conducted in a total of 160 nations. The parameters taken into account for the survey were healthcare, access to education and economic well being. It also took into account gender parity, which surprisingly turned out to be very high in some countries. The index was topped last year by Sweden, which was the best place to be a mother, this year the hours went to Norway. Norway came first and it was followed by Australia, Iceland, Sweden and Denmark with New Zealand, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. These countries formed the top ten in the index.

The countries that formed the bottom ten were Afghanistan, Niger, Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Sudan, Eritrea and Equatorial Guinea. Niger was the last in the index in 2009, but this time Afghanistan gained the notoriety of being the worst place on earth to be a mother.

In the year 2010, there were 43 countries that were developed and 117 were from the developing world. It was indeed appalling that 350000 women die in the world during pregnancy or childbirth. The child health statistics such as infant mortality rate, baby’s height and weight in the third world country were very bad. One in every twenty three mothers dies during pregnancy, one in every six children does not live to be five and one in every five children is malnourished. In the third world lack of basic healthcare and lack of family planning was cited as the main reason for pregnancy deaths and diseases. .The lack of skilled birth attendants and proper physician advice is the main cause of pregnancy related disorders in women in the developed world.
