Internet has become a part and parcel of our lives and in today’s time no one wants to wait for a very long time to set up their internet connections. If there are errors in the configurations of your Wi-Fi systems it can prove to be very risky.
Some recommendations are given below on how to set up and maintain the security of your Wi-Fi internet connection:-
- First and foremost important point is that a person must change the default username and password in the web page that is provided by the internet providers. The service providers ask for a particular username and password before you can connect. This should be changed right away so that internet hackers cannot trace your connectivity and misuse it.
- It is important to choose the compatible encryption technology for your network. An encryption technology is a security server that makes messages sent over the Wi-Fi network illegible to humans. But you have to be careful and chose the encryption identical to your system. Always find the lowest common denominator setting.
- All routers and network providers use the SSID which is a code that the manufacturer provides initially along with the system. This should be changed as the default SSID code is often well known. Although only by knowing this code, one cannot get into your network, it gives a hint that your system is not that well configured and provides the hackers a start.
- Hackers have softwares that can easily fake MAC addresses, these are identifiers that each and every connecting device has and the router verifies them before connecting you to the internet. So it is very important to verify these addresses.
- You must never try to auto connect in a Wi-Fi hotspot or a Wi-Fi enabled campus. It is of high risk to your system security.
- Due to the user friendly approach of the DHCP tool, it is but natural for everyone to set up a dynamic IP address with DHCP. However, it becomes equally easy for hackers to obtain your IP address using that tool. So, setting up a static IP address is a much safer thing to do. Turn off the DHCP and set a fixed range on your router instead.
- Modern networks generally have firewall installed in them. However it should be made a point to enable the firewall in every computer and routers to maintain its security.
- Contrary to popular belief a Wi-Fi router must be placed near to the centre of your house rather than near the windows. This is to prevent signal leakage. The less is the leakage, the better is the connection. Moreover this leads to illegal exploitation of the network.
- One of the simplest yet most effective ways to ensure security of your Wi-Fi network is by shutting off or disabling the network while not in use for a prolonged period. This prevents hackers from breaking in easily.
Although it is much more time consuming it is always better to set up a secured internet connection and enjoy the services without any tension or fear of hackers.
