Railways have always been the most preferred means of travel for the average, daily commuter, because of the fact that it is reasonably quick, regular and mostly, affordable. This also means that throughout the world, the railways throughout the world record a large number of accidents and several casualties all round the year, and unfortunately, most of these accidents have been caused due to human error rather than technical errors.
Thus, both passengers as well as railway workers must strive to be attentive and alert to avert any dangers while travelling. Passengers should be more careful as they have the maximum risk of getting involved in potential risks, mainly due to their carelessness and ignorance. While travelling, passengers should follow certain basic safety rules, which will reduce the chances of any accident.
- First and foremost, the passengers should follow all the rules that are mentioned in the do’s and don’ts list found on all railway platforms. Although most passengers find it unworthy of attention, following these simple rules may avert several accidents.
- While waiting for a train on a platform, always stand behind the safety line on the platform. Though it may appear that these safety lines are drawn excessively far away from the tracks, passengers need to keep in mind that all fast moving trains create a slipstream of air around them, which can easily suck in any careless passenger who comes too close to the tracks. Such tragedies can be prevented by maintaining a safe distance from the tracks while a train is passing through a platform.
- Daily commuters have a habit of running and boarding moving trains moving out from the station. Similarly, some impatient passengers sometimes try to jump out of trains before it has stopped properly. Both these cases are equally dangerous and cause fatal accidents to the individuals involved. If someone tries to board a moving train, there is always the probability that he or she may miss the foothold and then be dragged by the moving train. Similarly, anyone attempting to get off from a moving train may be involved in a similar accident. While on a train, it is advisable not to extend one’s hands outside the train through the windows.
- It is advisable not to move in the train carriages while the train is in motion. In case the passenger is standing, the passengers should make sure that they have something to hold onto, to guard against injuries if the train starts or stops suddenly. Grab rails should be utilized while boarding or alighting.
- Passengers should not carry inflammable materials or explosives while travelling on the railway. Most railways discourage the commuters from carrying firearms as well while travelling to minimize the risk of any co-passenger getting hurt in case the firearm accidentally goes off.
- There are usually a police division entrusted with the safety of the railways, and their personnel are usually present on all trains. In case of any suspicious person or object, they should be notified immediately.
