How can we help Haiti?

Haiti is currently facing a very difficult situation because of the high intensity earthquake that it was recently struck by. It had just started to recover from its latest slew of hurricanes and storms and was getting back on track to a certain extent. Haiti has been stuck by utter devastation and disaster with over between 50000 and 100000 casualties. Even the people who have been saved from the clutches of death have been reduced to living in the streets trying to scavenge for food. There is a complete deterioration in food supplies and other essential goods.

Haiti has a number of survivors whose homes have been destroyed by the earthquake. They are now forced to live out in the open with absolutely no place for shelter. Help has been slow in coming from the internal government because of the paucity of funds. This is because Haiti does not have many resources and is one of the poorest countries of the world. A lot of international effort and massive aid is required to put the country on the path to progress and to restore the situation to normalcy.

Common people can also help in contributing to the relief efforts. There are many organizations that have been established all over the world for this very purpose. They accept individual help and help mobilize the small and scattered efforts of a large number of people.

  1. Music: There is a unique website that offers the option to internet users to download music the proceeds for which go to the Haiti relief effort. MusicForRelief.org asks for donations and every drop counts no matter how small you may perceive it to be. The United Nations Foundation receives the monetary resources collected.
  2. National nurses United is an organization that employs voluntary nurses and sends them to provide help to the injured and sick in this strife torn region. However, the organization needs help to raise money to send the nurses to Haiti. It invites the public to donate money in order to help achieve this purpose. You can do your bit by parting with as much money as is possible for you as per your budget.
  3. The American Red Cross society has established a National Relief Fund through which it wants to provide food, shelter, clothing, etc. of the survivors of Haiti. It aims to achieve the target of two hundred thousand dollars as aid money which you can help attain by donating a bit of money from your income.
  4. UNFPA is an organization that is committed to providing medical supplies and other first aid items to Haiti survivors. It also aims to help the people maintain adequate personal hygiene, especially women and provides sanitary napkins and other such supplies. You can donate to this organization online.

No effort towards the help of Haiti survivors is small and every bit that is done is of great help. It increases the progress towards a return to normalcy bit by bit. A little compassion and generosity on the part of the people all around the world is all that is required to kick start the relief process.
