When you are planning to leave for a vacation along with all the members with your family, you not only need to plan your holiday but also need to pay due attention to the security measures that you adopt to keep your home protected. The moment that your house gets empty is the time when it is the most likely to fall prey to robberies and burglaries. However, you can prevent such instances by following a few useful safety precautions. It will not only enable you to fully enjoy your vacation but will also ensure that you can travel in a stress free manner without worrying about your empty residence.
1) You should not let any possible watchers who are stalking your house know that you are not present. Such people usually look out for newspapers that have not been picked up for quite a few days to know for sure that the owners of a particular house are actually absent. So, it is best to let your newspaperman know that you are going out and instruct him not to deliver them to your house until you return.
2) You should install a good alarm system that informs the local authorities of a possible threat to your house. There are hi-tech, state of the art systems available in the market that automatically dial the emergency numbers and leave a pre-recorded or computerized message.
3) You should never leave any priced or expensive items lying around in your house even if you are adequately locking all doors and windows. It is best to deposit them in your bank lockers so as to keep them totally safe.
4) Your answering machine should not have a message that somehow informs the callers about you being on a long vacation. Such information is best kept private as you do not know which strangers are going to be calling on your number.
5) There have been a number of incidents involving fires and gas leaks when owners of a house have been on vacation. So make sure that you switch off all gas knobs and possible electrical sockets that may result in fires.
6) A lot of people get home insurance to indemnify them against any losses that may occur in relation to their homes. However, they may forget to check whether it is up to date and fail to renew it. Thus their insurance cover is totally useless in case any unfortunate event does occur.
7) The best thing that you can do is employ a trusted neighbor or family member to watch over your house and visit it from time to time to make sure that nothing is wrong. They can thus inform you immediately in case something is wrong at your house.
8) Before you leave, you should check and double check that all the appliances in your house have been completely turned off. Some appliances when kept on for a long time including hair straighteners can start to melt and burn even damaging the things around. In extreme cases, a fire may also be triggered off.
9) You should never make the mistake of hiding the keys somewhere in your garden or outer area. You should instead carry them along with you wherever you are going.
