Street crime takes place in every neighbourhood and it’s necessary that we protect ourselves against this danger. People living in well off localities might think that it is something that they need not be afraid of, but that’s a wrong notion. Everyone thinks that just because an area has a low crime rate so they are safe, however, this is never true. With the number of unfortunate and destitute people taking this as the easy way out, all of us need to be safe. How do you keep yourself safe? There are a few things that one can do.
The first thing is that if you are walking in a locality or an area that you are unfamiliar with, take someone with you. It is always better to be accompanied by someone especially, if it’s after dark. The same is true if you are going to drive in an area that you aren’t familiar with. People who perpetuate street crimes are ready to take advantage of your unfamiliarity with the area.
One can’t stress enough on the importance of being vigilant. One has to have alacrity and be alert to survive in this mean 21st century. If you seem as though you are on your cell phone or listening to your IPod, people are open to the idea of taking advantage of you. It’s okay to listen to the IPod or use your cell phone but never ever drop your guard. Drop your guard and a street crime can happen in a split second.
Sometimes street crime can be prevented by not carrying a bulky wallet. Be careful not to be too conspicuous while handling your wallet. Carrying a purse might leave one to believe that you have cash on you. Flashing your ATM card or credit card is the last thing you would want to do. Girls should cover up as well so as not to draw attention to them. Girls should not dress provocatively in unfamiliar territory. It isn’t a bad idea to take some self defence classes as well as own some pepper spray as well, as a form of protection. Always keep the number of the police and emergency services on speed dial.
Men and women can both be victims of street crime. Street crime really follows no pattern, and no one can feel safe and secure. By thinking ahead and being on your guard you can ensure yourself that you are going to be safe when you are out on the street. When encountered with such situation one has to think on their feet. It’s all together better that you don’t get in this mess by keeping in mind these basic tips.
