Home invasion robbery is one of the most frightening experiences that a group of people may face. A home invasion robbery occurs when some people force themselves inside someone else’s house with the intent of just more than burglary, since it can involve robbery and assault on its occupants.

The burglaries generally take place at night when the house seems to be unoccupied. Before the actually burglary takes the place, the burglars will scrutiny the area or neighborhood looking for a weak link through which they might enter any one of the houses. Secure burglar systems, big dogs, bolts and bars and overall a good security system in the form of alert neighbors and constant patrol can sometimes deter burglars.

However home invasion robberies generally intrude when the house is occupied like at night when the whole neighborhood is asleep and when it is easy to panic its residents. They also occur at weekends. They sometimes target not only the house but also its occupants. The target can be various, from an old rich woman living alone to only children occupying the place while their parents are away only for that night. These robbers generally have a surveillance measure to have the feel of your house before committing the crime. They may visit your house as a salesman or mechanic to have a look at your security system. A home invasion robbery generally has a group of people inflicting the crime since they use physical manhandling to instill fear in its occupants, thus they have no intention of being overpowered. The most violent physical activity generally takes place in the very beginning when the robbers, who come prepared with arms or devices to hold down a person, intimidate and dominate the residents.

The most horrifying home invasion robbery which haunts people till date is the one at Kansas which involved the murder of four of its occupants in cold blood in the year 1959. The most recent example would be when three armed men forced themselves into a house in Phoenix in July, 2010.

The reason why robbers attack occupied homes can be many. Firstly they won’t have to worry about alarm systems going off, since the house is occupied. Secondly, these robbers generally disable the phone lines and other means of communication with the rest of the world thus reducing the chance of any neighbor or police walking in. once the residents have been subdued and quieted, then they are forced to give up their valuables.

As an act of prevention homeowners must use solid doors and reinforced locks which can prevent forced entries; but what are most important is that caution should be taken by all the family members. Sometimes robbers might even ring your bell and enter from the front door since most people do not check who is outside. Thus it is always advisable to use the peephole to check the person standing outside. If the person is unknown, ask for his ID card and if necessary ring up the organization from where he claims to come to check his background.
