Increasing identity theft in the US

Identity theft is becoming a very serious issue in the US with around nine million Americans suffering from the consequences of this crime every year. There has been a spurt in the number of identity theft cases reported in recent times with the invention of plastic money in the form of credit cards and increasing dependence on bank credit. Although it may not seem like a dangerous crime, in certain cases it can completely transform your life for the worse depending on the purpose for which your identity has been stolen.

There are many ways that criminals can use to obtain information about your identity like your credit card number, your debit card number, your passwords, your social security number, etc. They can then proceed to commit any act under your name as they will not be held accountable for it. On the contrary, you may be held responsible for any theft or fraud committed in your name. Even loans taken on your name may be pinned on you even if you have nothing to do with them. This aspect if identity theft is what makes it highly risky.

There have recently been many reported cases of identity theft in the United States of America alone. In one such case, a woman was called by a person who was impersonating bank staff. Trusting the genuineness of the identity of the caller, the woman parted with all confidential information with the result being quite grave. She faced empty bank accounts and the loss of her hard-earned money.

Another case that is worth being quoted here is the one in which a man applied to a tourist agent so as to avail a tourist package to the European continent. After submitting his passport for this purpose, the man never heard from the fraudulent agent again. Intelligence reports state that there is a huge passport market operating in the world with a huge demand for American citizenship passports that sell for thousands of dollars. This makes it imperative that you remain very careful regarding who you hand over your original passport to. Wherever possible, you should try to submit copies of your passport and refrain from handing over your original document as it forms an inherent part of your identity. The person who may travel using your passport can conduct any kind of illegal activity internationally for which you will ultimately be held responsible irrespective of your actual involvement.

There has been a recent spurt in phishing and scam e mails that are targeted at bank customers. The e mails are cleverly disguised as official correspondence e mails and your online banking password and username may be demanded. There are many people who have fallen prey to this effort on the part of the perpetrators to retrieve information and as a result have ended up losing their identity. The loss of one’s identity can cause a lot of stress and anxiety and one may have to approach multiple channels to get relief. This makes it important to guard yourself stringently against such threats.
