Safety tips to be followed when there is a power cut at home

A power cut can bring your life to a halt as most of our daily tasks are centered on electricity. Such a situation can also present a significant risk to your safety and security because of the darkness that accompanies it. It can become difficult to perform basic tasks like cooking and going to the bathroom and the absence of light can put you at risk of robberies if you are not careful enough. The following tips should be kept in mind in case of a power cut:

1)    You should keep a kit in place that can help you deal with a power cut. This kit should consist of torches, food supplies and water and should be ideally kept in an accessible place that all family members are aware of. When there is a power cut, it can become quite difficult to locate such a kit that you may have put together because of complete darkness.

2)    It is best not to use candles for lighting purposes as they can put houses greatly at risk of a fire especially if wood is the basic material of construction. It is better to stick to oil lamps or battery powered sources of light in order to ensure the safety of you and your family.

3)    As soon as the electricity goes out, you should immediately switch off all the electrical appliances as they can be at risk of damage if there are any fluctuations in the electric current that may be likely in a power cut that has occurred due to a repair process. These fluctuations can also cause electric shocks for anyone who ventured too near them.

4)    If you receive news of an impending power cut, it is wise to recharge all your phones so that the channels of communication remain open. In case there is a long power cut, it may not be possible to get in touch with the authorities if there is a need to do so. You should also stock up on food supplies if you have prior information about a power cut.

5)    When there is a power cut, your alarm systems will also stop working. So, you should take other measures to keep your house safe. You should check all the doors and windows of the house and affirm that they are adequately locked. It can be very easy for a thief to sneak into your house without being observed when there is no light. It is also better to light up all the doorways by strategically placing battery powered torches.

6)    The food supplies in your refrigerator can go stale and put your health at risk if you consume them. It is best to throw out all foodstuffs kept in your fridge after a period of eight hours. Packaged foods like chips and biscuits should be stocked up to meet your energy requirements.

The above mentioned guidelines can help you remain safe and secure in the event of a power cut and ensure that no mishaps take place.
