Children and Internet safety

Children and teenagers are among the largest consumers of Internet and online chat and messenger. Although you may be tempted to do it, you can not claim the child does not access the internet. Besides the many interesting and exciting games for children, the Internet is full of inadequate information and dangers, and children may be exposed to malicious intentions of some people. However, parents can do many things for the web to be a safe place for children.
What is the first thing parents need to do for protecting their children from Internet dangers? Instead of trying to stop them from using the internet, it is better to try talk with them about what they do online. Encourage them to always tell a parent or teacher when browsing the Internet. Ask them what they like, who they met, which are her favorite sites.
Keep the computer in the living room – it is a must! Experts recommend that if a computer is used by children, to be held in the living room on sight for parents and adults who should supervise. It is a tactic that has a good chance to encourage children to talk about what they do and ask for help when they come across something disturbing.
There is also parental control software on the Internet. It would be worthwhile to use parental control software, which filters websites addresses. However, many filters are unsophisticated and blocks useful sites.
Too much spam and pornography unfortunately! Many parents are concerned about unsuitable messages ending in children’s inbox. The reason is that pornography has become one of the most common forms of spam – unwanted e-mails, unsolicited, sent by the millions. For avoiding them you need to set up two e-mails for your child. One of them will be a private address that you give to friends. The other may be a public address, which you can use when browsing on the internet or when subscribing or joining the forums. This address will straighten spam e-mails so it should be filtered by a parent who can delete inappropriate messages.
Chat room sites are dangerous for children. Children chat room is a great opportunity to meet and discuss with other children around the world. Nevertheless, a child should always be very careful in chat rooms. You should always ask a parent allowed to go into a chat room.
Even if the label says that a chat room is only for children, yet there is no way to determine if all participants are children. There could be an adult or older child who tries to seduce younger users. Your child should not pretend to be someone else or something else than he is. If a child begins to feel better in a chat room about what anyone says, you should leave the chat room and to tell an adult about it.
If a child receives an e-mail is urged not to tell his parents about it, they should not answer, but to immediately notify an adult about the message. If children use messenger type programs, encourage them to keep lists of friends “closed” to help limit the persons who may contact you.
Before deciding to allow your child accessing the Internet you should take into consideration that if the child is too young he can’t be aware of the dangers that he might find. Therefore, you as an adult you have to be very careful and as much as possible to supervise most of children usages of Internet.
