In most countries, the right legal age for kids to drive and get a learner’s permit is usually sixteen. It can even be eighteen in some areas. These age limits have been fixed by different governments keeping in mind the fact that at this age, children develop a sense of maturity and can handle a vehicle responsibly. However, simply havening the laws in place is just not enough as there have been lost of cases in the recent past involving underage drivers or teenage drivers who may be of age but may be dangerous on the roads due to drunken driving. Some of them may even be in the habit of talking on the phone or texting while driving through busy intersections. As parents, it is important to be aware of the right time to hand over the keys of the car to your kid so as to help protect their lives and that of others on the road. The following points can help you determine when you should let your kid drive:
- Different children have different temperaments and sensibilities. While one child may have a stable temperament and calm and composed demeanor, another one may have a brash and violent one. Such behavioral signs can be considered while making the decision of whether to let your kid drive or not. Age is just a number in this case and a kid who may be of age may be a bad driver and dangerous on the road while one who is under age and does not possess a license yet may be one of the most careful drivers in the world.
- The laws of the area that you live in should provide guidance to parents when it comes to determining the right time to let kids drive. If the government of your country provides a learner’s license at age sixteen for instance, you should enroll your child for driving classes at this age and allow him/her to drive under your supervision. When a child possesses a learner’s license, it is important for him/her to be accompanied by a person who possesses a valid license. At this stage however, you must never allow your child to take the car alone as even if your child has learned how to drive, you may be in for legal trouble in case caught by the traffic police.
- You should watch out for signs of trouble in your child even after he/she has passed the driving test and obtained a license. If you find your kids are having frequent run-ins with the law and being pulled up by cops, you should take away the keys of their car until they mend their behavior and learn to be more responsible. In case your child is having regular accidents, you should consider taking away their right to drive for a while and encourage them to practice more before driving on the roads again.
You should keep the above mentioned useful points in mind when allowing your kids to drive. This way you not only keep them safe but also help prevent the loss of other precious lives.
