Mortise locks got their names because of the mortises that function in an almost similar way that deadbolt locks do, with the exception that mortises cuts into the door to secure it. A mortise lock is often used with a steel door which then provides a significant high level of security. Because of the intricate nature of these locks it needs to be installed by a professional. It is unlikely that you will find these locks on any kind of residential property doors but rather on large entryways of commercial properties.

An alternative to conventional keys are keyless locks that function with an electronic keypad. People with the right to access receive a code and need to enter the code into the keypad in order to open the customary deadbolt lock and gain access to the premises.
