Dangers while Kite Flying

Kite flying – apparently one of the most simple and easiest forms of sporting around. Known to man since the ancient ages, kite flying has withstood the ravages of time and still retains its old-day charm and grace. It is not uncommon to find people of all ages, from small children to adults, enjoying flying a kite. However, the surprising fact is that kite flying can be an especially risky sport, if not supervised properly. There are several unwanted and undesired situations which may arise when kites are not flown properly. An out-of –control kite can pose a danger to the flyer and the nearby people alike.

The most important thing that needs to be kept in mind while flying kites is keeping in mind the surroundings. An unmindful kite flyer is a danger to himself as well as people and objects in the immediate vicinity. Instances are not unknown where people have caused serious injuries to others because of concentrating too much on the kite instead of minding his or her surroundings. Another problem concerning the sport of kite flying is the probability of the kite being thrown out of control by rough atmospheric conditions. A sudden gust of wind may carry the kite down and strike somebody in the vicinity. Even though the probability of such an event happening is considerably less, there have been certain instances where such injuries have been fatal and lead to extensive damage to body parts like eyes.

Flying kites near power lines should be avoided at all costs. This is because there is a high probability that the kite may get tangled in the power line. If any such instance takes place, the flyer should never attempt to take down the kite from the power line by himself. Power lines carry well over a few thousand volts of electricity, which may easily carry down the kite line regardless of the type of line being used. Anyone touching the kite or the kite line can get a lethal electric shock, which may cause instantaneous death. If a kite gets entangled in the power lines, it is also ill advisable to leave the kite hanging there as it may pose a potential danger to unsuspecting passersby or vehicles. It is always advisable to notify the local utility company or the local electric supervision official and make some proper arrangements to get the kite cut down.

Kite flying has always been a competitive sport, and regular competitions are organized where kite flyers try to establish their supremacy over each other. The kites furnished for this purpose usually have modified flying lines, which are improved with certain additions like glass powder in order to make them more strong and capable of cutting through their opponents flying lines. In some cases, normal lines are replaced by metallic ones to make the kites more formidable. The danger with such kinds of flying lines is that they may cause injury to unsuspecting people nearby. Flyers should take care that these cases do not happen.
