How to Prevent a Fire Hazard in the Office

It has become common for modern business premises to have fire fighting devices installed as a means of preventing and fighting fire. Business owners and corporate organization managers are putting fire safety policies and procedures in place at their workplace and educating their employees on the same. It ensures that not only the business is secured but also employees and client lives are protected in case of fire outbreak. There have been instances where businesses have been razed to the ground and lives lost as a result of failing to adhere to fire codes.

The most basic fire safety precaution which you need to have in place is fire extinguishers. These are readily available for sale from leading suppliers and can assist in case of fire breakout before the fire brigade arrives. These should be installed at specific points on the business premise where they are accessible to any person. However, there are different types of fire extinguishers and knowing the difference between each that is in the market is of significance. Each fire extinguisher has been designed to fight a specific fire. The different grades of fire extinguishers are class A, B, C, D and K fire extinguishers. Knowing what each has been designed for will help greatly in trying to put out fire quickly. Employees must be taught to distinguish between the different types of extinguishers and must be trained in how to use them.

Secondly, when there are electronic appliances in the office, i.e. computers, microwave and coffee maker amongst others, it is important to note that they are likely to catch fire. This every employee needs to be aware of and apply all the necessary safety measures. As such, when not using electronic devices, you are strongly urged to turn them off when not using them. In addition, they need to plug off these devices from the mains power supply as there are scenarios where the device may be off but there is still electric current flowing in them. This especially applies to devices that are usually on standby mode.

Thirdly, it is important for the business premise to have smoke detectors installed in every room. Nobody, really ever knows where fire normally breaks out and having a smoke detector will greatly help in identifying the source of the fire and putting it off immediately. Ensure that smoke detectors are well maintained and working conditions checked regularly to ensure that they are working properly. To do so, have the batteries replaced every six months.

Fourthly, there needs to be clear fire exit signs. These needs to an alternate route other than the ones used on a day to day basis.

Last but not least, fire safety starts with the employees. It is upon the business entrepreneur to educate their employees on fire safety procedures. For instance, you there needs to be occasional fire drills to check if employees are well averse with fire fighting safety.
