Alcoholism is a rising problem that affects a vast number of people all over the world. It is seen as a way of escape for many but they fail to realize that they are actually increasing the amount of troubles in their life instead of finding solutions to problems. Although a moderate amount of alcohol at social events is not harmful, addiction to drinking can cause a variety of health and mental problems that not only affect the person suffering from the addiction but also those around him like his family, friends, etc. Alcoholism can lead to financial troubles and can even cause emotional problems thus tearing up the fabric of family life. Thus in order to have a functional existence, it is vital that near and dear ones are aware of the multiple ways in which they can help an affected person battle the problem of alcohol abuse.

- There may also be unwarranted urges to have alcoholic drinks at odd hours of the day which if not satisfied could lead to the person becoming irritable and moody.
Things you can do to eliminate this problem: There are certain things that can be done to combat this problem. If you feel that someone close to you is an alcoholic, you can do your bit to enable the person to come to terms with his addiction and corner him/her into taking the requisite steps to become sober again. Some of the ways that this can be achieved are:
- The first step is to visit a suitable doctor. Sometimes, oral prescriptions may be prescribed in order to reduce the ill effects of alcohol withdrawals. Certain medication may also be advised for reducing the cravings.
- Apart from the medical help, psychological help should also be sought as overcoming alcoholism is also a matter of convincing your mind not to crave it in the first place.
- It is wise to stay away from all such places where there are drinks available for a while until the person can learn to control himself.
