There are those who love to watch movies, swim or hike. But the only leisure activity that has stood the test of time is kite flying. It is enjoyed by the old and the young worldwide. Nonetheless, unknown to some people is that whereas kite flying can be a fun filled leisure interest, it can also be hazardous when the necessary precautions are not put in place. There have been instances of grave injuries and fatalities while kite flying. As such, the article seeks to provide tips and guidelines on how not only to stay safe but that also ensure that those around you are safeguarded from injuries.
First and foremost, you should never fly your kites over or near power lines. The average power line is known to carry up to 7 000 volts which when passed down your kite line will most definitely electrocute you. This is in spite of the type of line you are using. The moment you fly your kite around power lines, you are putting yourself at risk. Do not attempt to untangle your kite when it is stuck on the power lines. The immediate thing you need to do is to let go of the lines and contact the nearest utility company. At the same time, make certain that the location has been secured to avoid any other person from getting injured.
Secondly, do not attempt to fly your kite in a stormy weather. We have all heard of the experimental exercise in the storm by Ben Franklin. But, the reality is that he was lucky to escape with his skin. Lighting is known to carry more voltages than the average power line. When lighting does strike, it is not limited to time and space. It hits anyplace anytime. Therefore, when you decide to fly your kite in a stormy weather, you are simply setting yourself up as a giant lightening arrester.
Thirdly, when flying your kite in a public area, e.g. parks you need to be more considerate of those who are around you. It is easy to be carried away when flying your kite. There have been instances where persons have been injured when those flying their kites rammed into them in an attempt to balance their kites. To avoid injuries always watch out for obstacles
Fourthly, do not fly kites near people. Unknown to a majority of persons is that in a windy weather, kites can attain speeds of over 80 KPH. At such a speed, if the kite happens to hit someone, chances of fatalities are extremely high. The immediate affect that a kite flying at high speeds is the tension it applies on the lines making it to be razor sharp. If a person happens to come into contact with the line at the moment, they could be severely cut.
