There is no doubt that automobiles have become the number one means of transportation in the present century. Whether it is going to the mall, work, school or transporting goods we all need a car or a truck. Nonetheless, it should also be known that automobiles are the one of the leading cause of deaths. Auto accidents, i.e. big rig, car and motorcycle accidents are often as a result of recklessness, negligence or intent.

Having seen the number of innocent lives lost on the roads with each passing year, the article seeks to offer insights on simple road safety measures that if each of us were to follow, then the tragedy which is road accidents will be a thing of the past.

Road safety measures

DUI: Driving under the influence also commonly referred to as DUI is whereby a driver decides to get behind the wheel whilst under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs or substance drugs. It is important to know that when you are under the influence of any drug, your concentration level is greatly reduced. It is estimated that hundreds of lives are lost each year as a result of drunken driving. Worse is that the lives lost are as a result of the driver driving under the influence who much of the time survive the crash. Therefore, if you have to drink, it is highly recommended that you have a designated driver for the night. This will go a long way in preventing some of the lives which are lost due to impaired concentration.

Car Maintenance: Poorly maintained vehicles are known to cause accidents on the road. Automobile mechanics often recommend that you take your car for maintenance after a given amount of miles have been covered. When you take your car for repairs, the mechanic will be able to fix any issues that may be with your breaks. In addition, the coolant and oil levels will be checked. If your headlamps are faulty, they too will be replaced. The conditions of your tires are also vital. It is a known fact that worn out tires have poor grip on the roads. As such, when on wet or freshly tarmac road the likelihood of you loosing    the control of your car is high. Therefore, make certain that after every 3000 kilometers that you take your car for maintenance.

Road Rules: It is important that when driving that you obey all the road rules. Some of the road accidents that occur are often when drivers decide to ignore road rules. When you drive a red light, chances are that you may crash into another car or run over a pedestrian crossing the road. Therefore, make sure that you are abreast with all the road rules and their meaning and making sure that you stick to them.

Seat Belts: Before switching on your car, make certain that you have put on your seat belts. No amount of words can underscore the value of seat belts.

Last but not least, road safety starts with you. The moment that you get behind the wheels it is your life that is on the line.
