Sunlight and Skin Protection

Warmer days are coming so it is important to protect skin from harmful solar radiation, whether you are walking, cycling or just planting flowers on the terrace. Skin exposure to sun light is basically a very beneficial for the skin. This stimulates synthesis of vitamin D that is essential for calcification of bones. However, with appearance of ozone holes in the atmosphere, sunlight is becoming very dangerous and can cause skin cancer.

As we don’t want to get sick and tired on your vacation, it is necessary to prepare quality protective creams, paying attention to the most protective factor. As a matter of fact, these creams are stopping and absorbing harmful UV rays. Unfortunately, we cannot trust the authenticity of the information on the labels on sunscreens, so be careful. Inform yourself before buying. What we need to look for when buying sunscreen is that it contains ingredients with herbal and mineral base, and without chemical additives. Go to the natural products store and find that kind of cream for yourself and your family. You should shop only Natural products. Keep in mind that popular sun screens contain chemicals that may affect the normal sexual development and cause problems of the reproductive organs, and cause skin irritation and rashes.

What kind of clothes best protect against UV rays?

Clothes should cover most of the body surface. This means wearing clothes that is light and comfortable, but with long sleeves, the longer skirts. It is essential that the materials should be made of densely woven fibers, because this way skin will be protected from UV rays. Clothes with darker colors give more protection against UV radiation (though we feel warmer). We should pay attention on some other things too. For example, our clothes need to be dry because wet materials let more UV rays. Several years ago, some countries have made clothes from materials that provide full UV protection.

Ways in which you can protect yourself and your family:

• Buy a sunscreen that contains natural ingredients.

• Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before sun exposure.

• Every two hours, apply a new layer of sun cream and after swimming or perspiration, even if you use a cream that is “waterproof”.

• Wear dark densely woven clothing that will prevent the penetration of sunlight, instead of the thin and light clothing.

• Wear a wide brim hat to protect head, neck, face and ears.

• Protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses that provide protection from UV radiation.

• Buy your children quality sunglasses too.

• Avoid sun exposure in time 10:00 to 15:00 hours (especially children).

• Use olive oil as a protection from the sun. Fishermen are doing that for centuries. Dermatologists claim that sun cream with UV protection factor 20th helps against sunburn. Natural protection is free of harmful chemical ingredients.

We must accept the fact that the intensity of UV radiation significantly increased and will remain so in future. It is smart to change habits and adapt them to new conditions, respecting the advice of experts. Excessive exposure to UV is like a bomb slow burning wick – exposing to radiation today, each of us risk to be among the one-quarter of the population that will become ill of a type of skin cancer during the life. It is extremely important so save your personal safety.
