Is Eating Late at Night Unhealthy?

Traditionally, dinner is supposed to be served at 6 pm. But, because of the busy lifestyle that most people lead today, we have people eating their supper as late as 11 pm. This in turn has raised a lot of concerns especially amongst health experts. Generally, the body is less active at night. As such, it uses less energy. As such, you are more likely to gain a lot of weight at night than during the day.

A common hypothesis that most people have as stated earlier is that eating late at night does not offer your body adequate time to utilize the calories, thus making you gain weight. The main issue is that most people tend to feed on junk foods late at night, for example, crisps, sodas and yogurt amongst others instead of eating healthy snacks. Given that junk foods contain high fat and sugar content, you are more likely to gain weight at night.

There are less physical activities at night, meaning that your body keeps the excess calories as fat. For example, if you consume the same amount of meal between 6pm and 9pm, you will be up and down trying to get ready for the next day, this in turn causes your body to utilize the calories consumed. However, after 9pm, chances are that you are exhausted and the last thing you want is to hang around while waiting for your system to absorb the food.

There is sufficient proof to show that eating late at night can cause gastrointestinal crunch. Unknown to most people is that the digestive system needs rest. Gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcers and mucosal erosion are usually triggered by eating late at night as the system lacks adequate time to rest.

What’s more is that, eating late at night causes your system to go into an overdrive. Whereas you may be asleep, your system is still busy working. As such, you may wake up in the morning feeling exhausted. If you have been having the feeling of exhaustion in the morning, likelihoods are that you are eating late at night.

Whereas a once in a while night over-eating might not be much of an issue to most people, there is a condition referred to as night-eating syndrome (i.e. sleep eating disorder). Folks that suffer from night eating syndrome eat a minimum of 25% to 50% of their standard calories once they are through with having dinner, virtually every night. Sleep eating disorder patients are also known to suffer from depression, overweight issues as well as low self-assurance.
