Even if you think that you have made reservations at a hotel that is located in a safe neighborhood and that provides a dedicated hotel security staff, crime still may be a major problem. That is why, just because you are on vacation (or on business) does not mean you should let your guard down.
When staying in a hotel you should act as if you would in a mall, airport, or even at home, so says Catrinea Houston who has run hotels in Las Vegas and Southern California. “I've seen everything from stealing a coat, car, money, jewelery, guns, and laptops. Never check in electronics with a bell man, rather take anything of value with you. Lock your valuables in the room safe or in the hotel lock boxes because theft can happen even from your maid.”
One of the worst hotel crimes is that of a hotel room invasion. A hotel room invasion happens when criminal forces his way into an occupied hotel room and robs you or commits other crimes. In the case of a room invasion the robber will operate in a number of ways. The intruder sometimes will simply kick open the door and confront who is inside or he will knock and enter through the front door. The robber might pose as a hotel staffer, room service, or housekeeper. Furthermore, Houston says you should also watch out for someone who follows you into the elevator and gets off on the same floor. “They might walk behind you as if going to their room. Once you open your door, the robber will force his way in.”
Some tips to avoid a room invasion (and general security tips as well) include, when you arrive to your room be sure that sliding glass doors, windows, and connecting room doors are locked. Keep the door shut when you're in your room and use all the locks provided. If anyone comes knocking, then ask for identification. When you leave, turn on a light and the TV. Make sure the door latches before you go on your way and you might want to also (if your room is already clean) place a "do not disturb" sign on the door.
Still, there are travel security devices that you can buy and take with you while away from your home to help keep you safe. One is the portable door lock which is pretty easy to use and installs on a door in seconds. The lock is lightweight and can stop someone from entering your room. You can get one as cheap as $10.00. Then there is also the doorstop alarm for $12.00. You wedge it below the door and it sounds off if someone enters. There are many security devices to choose from but nothing beats having street smarts. If something does happen keep a cool head and remember money and valuables can be replaced, but you cannot.
Hotel security is a big topic, from parking in the hotel garage to giving out your information at the front desk. If you are traveling for a vacation or on business it's best to do your research on safety before you leave home.
