The saying, “Fire is a good servant but a bad master” is not in vain. Electricity in our homes provides us with light and warmth. In addition, we use it to cook and power virtually every household appliance. However, electricity can also be hazardous. A majority of homeowners are known to handle anything to do with fixtures and repairs on their own. After all, everything that you need on “how to repair…” or “how to fix…” is easily available on the internet. As such, if you enjoy fixing electronic appliances at home, you will find this article quite an interesting read.

Discussed herein are safety precautions you need to follow when fixing electronic appliances at home:

First and foremost, make sure that the electronic appliance has been switched off and disconnected from the mains power supply. A common mistake that a number of homeowners do is to assume that just because the appliance is switched off, there is no electricity flowing into it and do not disconnect it from the mains power supply.

Make sure that the area is clean and dry. In case the area is moist, look for another place that is dry. We all know that water conducts electricity and fixing in a wet spot can be dangerous.

Wear protective gear whilst working. Eye protection will prevent chippings from getting into your eyes in case you are drilling an object. Gloves will prevent your hands from getting cuts and shocks by touching sharp objects or touching naked electric wires.

If there are lose cables or damaged extension cords, make sure that they have been replaced before proceeding. In addition, place plastic covers over the electric outlets where you have disconnected the power cable from.

Work close to a mains power supply so as to avoid running extension cables across the room. This in turn will prevent accidents that may rise due to tripping on the cables.

Follow and adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions when opening, working and closing the electronic appliance. In case you are not sure about something, you can run a search for it on the internet. Do not do anything you are not sure about.

If you are working with a lamp, make sure that it has been placed on a flat surface and away from materials that can easily catch fire.

If there are any internal components that are to be replaced, make certain that the replacements are in line with the manufacturer’s specifications.

If the electronic appliance is still malfunctioning after you have fixed it, you should probably take it to a qualified electrician to look at it.

Do not be tempted to overload an outlet just because you are working on a home appliance. Use outlets that are not being utilized.

There are two main advantages of a wireless intercom system. First is that there are no wires to deal with between units which makes it very easy to do and secondly that you can reposition the units at your convenience.

Wireless intercom systems installs in minutes and can be working as soon as you provide it with sufficient power, may it be batteries or DC power. However, along the convenience the risk of interference is also present. It is possible that other wireless devices close to the intercom can cause interferences such as a wireless data network, a cordless phone, or electrical motors can cause disturbances.

An alternative risk is that other persons can pick up your conversations via a baby monitor, a scanner, cordless phone or any other comparable equipment that operates on the same frequency. Fortunately, there are wireless intercom systems that can reduce or completely eliminate these problems.

In the US there are a number of frequencies especially for the use of wireless products and systems. The most common frequencies are 49MHz, MURS 150 MHz, and FM between 200KHz up to 270KHz, 2,4Ghz, 5,8GHz, and 900MHz. Alternatively you can make use of Power Line Carrier units that make use of the current electrical house wiring to transfer signals to and from wireless appliances.

Normally low end wireless products such as baby monitors, and conventional cordless phones still use the 49MHz frequency. It is a short range and communication is not secure. This is also the most likely frequency that will pick up disturbances from other devices. No wireless intercom systems make use of this band.

It is possible to find a wireless intercom that makes use of the FM band. However, this is not a popular choice amongst consumers because optimum functionality depends on the number of other electrical appliances is used close to the system and it is highly likely that you will experience interferences. Conversations are also not secure.

North America, Israel, and Australia are the only countries using the 900MHz frequency. Previously wireless intercom systems making use of the 900MHz band applied analog technology. This was very risky because anyone that carried an appliance with the same band could listen to your communication. Fortunately today a number of 900MHz wireless products make use of digital spread spectrum transmission that transmit the signal over a different number of frequencies to ensure privacy.

Although there are not many wireless intercom systems using the 2,4MHz band, it is available all over the world. It is mostly used by wireless video intercom systems. The hindrance about the 2,4MHz systems is that this frequency is also used by wireless data networks which ultimately mean that you are likely to experience interference from there. One way to try to solve this problem is to change the channels of the wireless data router, which likely will solve the problem.

GSM stands for global system for mobile communication. About 80% of the world uses GSM technology when placing wireless calls.

GSM stands for global system for mobile communication. About 80% of the world uses GSM technology when placing wireless calls. Cell phone carriers T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM for their cell phone networks. While Sprint, Virgin Mobile, and Verizon Wireless use the competing CDMA standard.

Typically, an internal or external alarm system GSM module operates over a GSM/GPRS cellular network. This means the system reports and communicates, not only with landline phones, but with cell phones as well. Therefore, if your telephone lines are cut or disabled, the home stays secure and there remains a way for the system to call out to a monitoring station, or you, or both.

GSM has the advantage of using SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards. The SIM card, which acts as your digital identity, is tied to your cell phone service carrier’s network rather than to the handset itself. If you opt for a GSM module for your alarm system, the SIM card would be placed within your module, just as the card would be within a cell phone.

Having a GSM module in place can provide a primary or back-up plan if your telephone landline is cut or you don’t have (or want) a landline to begin with. Remember, cut phone lines can come about when the phone company messes up, weather plays a part, or when lines are intentionally cut by a thief trying to break into your home.

Having this GSM module in place is my back-up in case our phone line is cut due to a phone company mistake, weather, or if the lines are cut by a potential thief.

There are many basic terms and definitions when it comes to understanding a home or business burglar alarm system. One such definition is an alarm zone.

There are many basic terms and definitions when it comes to understanding a home or business burglar alarm system. One such definition is an alarm zone. Each window or door integrated into the system is considered a zone. In other words, a zone is a simple way of separating the alarm devices which work in conjunction with your alarm panel. Therefore, if your front door is attached to Zone 1, every time that door is opened the “Zone 1” light on your alarm keypad should light up. This is beneficial not only for the home or business owner, but for the monitoring station as well. Because the system is divided by zones, the station will know what area triggered the alarm.

A basic alarm system is capable of controlling about six to eight zones. However, many panels permit the addition of expansion modules that allow the system to monitor up to 32 zones or more.

For wireless alarm systems, installers will assign one zone per device. On the other hand, an installer may choose to make a hardwire system with one zone comprised of multiple devices. For example, Zone 1 might be the master bedroom, which in turn is made up of both a motion detector and window sensor.

These days it pays to be safe and people are realizing that. There are so many different home security systems available that it can be a daunting task to find the security that you need. This is why it is always a good idea to do your research and learn about home security.

Do it yourself home security doesn’t just include the home security system. There are other things that will help keep your home safe that you have to do if you really want to have home security for your family. You need to figure out your budget so that you know what you can get and what you can’t. There are many affordable security systems but some of them are more expensive. So you always have to be careful and know your budget before you start making your home safe.

With do it yourself home security you can definitely save money on the installation costs. Plus you have the added bonus of knowing that you didn’t have to have strangers in your home to get the home security you want. There are some basic components that you will need if you are going to do it yourself.

Here are the do it yourself home security components that you will need in order to do the job right. Remember that the more secure your home is the better your home security is. This is the best way to keep your family safe.

One: Window locks and bolts for the doors. This is the first step you want to take with home security. You need to put sliding bolts on all of the doors that lead outside and on all of the locks on the windows. You not only need to install them but once they are in place you have to remember to use them. Otherwise, they aren’t any use for security. Every time you leave the house or at night, you want to make sure you check to make sure everything is locked tight.

Two: Outside Lights are the second step in do it yourself home security. Good lighting is always a good idea but you want to make sure that you get the motion detecting lights and place them around your home outside and on the perimeter of your property if you can do that to. The more light you have the better your home security will be because this will stop anyone from being able to sneak up to your home under the cover of darkness.

Three: The next step in do it yourself home security is security cameras. There are many wireless, internet ready security cameras that are stand alone that you can get for cheap These cameras will broadcast a signal online for you to keep track of it. This makes it easy to monitor the cameras from any computer that is connected to the internet. This means that setting up security cameras for your home security is simple to do and use.

All of these are very important components for do it yourself home security. There are other things that you can add that will help more with your home security but those are things that you get only if you want to and can afford it. Always make sure you check out everything and learn more about it before you decide to get it because security for your home is important so don’t rush any decision.

If you do than you need to make sure that you figure out the right system for you. Many people will get the system installed by professionals. However, this is not the right way for everyone. There are many people that prefer the DIY intercom systems.

So why do so many people like the DIY intercom systems? There are a couple of different reasons why. Here are some of the more common reasons.

One: With the DIY intercom systems you will be able save money. The professionally installed intercom systems can get expensive, depending on the system you choose. When you do it yourself it will be much cheaper because all you have to do is buy the system you want and then follow the instructions to install it.

Two: Some people just like to do it themselves or they don’t like strangers traipsing around their home. This is when the DIY intercom systems come in really handy.

Three: With the DIY intercom systems you will be able to choose only the equipment you want and you don’t have to get any extras.

These are just a few of the reasons why so many people prefer the DIY intercom systems. You will have to decide for yourself which way you want to go. To help you do this you want to do some research about the different intercom systems that are available. This will make it much easier for you to choose the right system for your home.

You can even find the intercom systems that you need right online. Then you can buy it from the comfort of your own home and have it delivered for you. Before you install it you want to make sure that you have everything you need. You also want to make sure that you have shut off the electricity to where you will install it. That way you don’t have extra problems on your hands.

With so many different DIY intercom systems available you have to take the time to choose carefully. You don’t want to waste your money and you want to make sure that you get one of the intercom systems that will fit your home. So always take your time before you buy anything.

Alarm and Monitoring Services

If you decide to go with a professional alarm service, keep in mind that this is generally the more expensive route. Professionals will come into your home, install your alarm system, program your keypad, and then you can opt for extra monitoring services. If you choose to cancel your service or contract, the alarm company has the right to come in and remove all of the installed equipment because they own it.

The good thing about installing it yourself is that you own the equipment. Plus, you can get an independent monitoring service to work with your system for as little as $9 a month. However, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could end up with lots of wasted time, a faulty alarm system, and possible damage to your home. Make sure you have the proper tools (and electrical skills) to install your alarm properly.

Hardwired, Wireless, or Both?

Foregoing professional alarm installation can be soft on your wallet, but which system is right for you?

Hardwired systems are the most difficult to install, though they are easiest on the pocketbook. You may be saving money, but connecting wires from sensor to sensor throughout your house can be extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. If your house is prewired, consider yourself lucky. On the other hand, a hardwired system has easy upkeep and hardly needs servicing. Also, unless your wiring changes, your system will not become easily outdated.

Wireless alarm systems are the easiest to install, but they cost the most. Fortunately, they are extremely reliable and effective once installed, and some are completely customizable. But keep in mind, batteries for wireless systems must be changed constantly, and the systems can easily become out of date. Generally, if this happens, the whole system must be replaced instead of just parts.

Many people choose a security system that is a mix of hardwired and wireless. This is a plus for the do-it-yourselfer who doesn’t want to spend the money on a complete wireless system, but can’t reach all of the areas in house that are needed for a hardwired system. Generally, batteries on these hybrid units will last anywhere from 2-5 years.

The Right Decision

Whether you decide to hire a professional alarm service or do it yourself, make sure to do enough research so you can make an informed decision. If you aren’t the handiest of handymen, it’s probably worth it to hire professionals. If you happen to be a DIY guru, make sure you have the right tools, and remember that you get what you pay for. Typically, your insurance company can provide you with a list of security systems that both of you will approve of. Either way, examine all of your options so you can be sure that you are getting the best security system for you.

However, many homeowners fail to take the necessary precautions to secure their homes against illegal entry. Even if you are on a tight budget, there are basic do-it-yourself steps that you can take to better protect your home.

One of the choices you have when you are determined to increase the security of your home is to implement a do-it-yourself home security program. With an install it yourself system, you have the ability to choose what components you can afford. For instance, if you want sensors on every window and door, then that’s what you will choose for your system. Because you are the security system designer, you decide what it does.

Little or No Cost Burglar Prevention

There are many ways you can secure your home with little or no cost:

1.) Conduct a security check of your home to determine possible weaknesses

2.) Fake Security Cameras are a cost effective of way of deterring criminals from your home Fake cameras look exactly like real cameras. Quality fake cameras come equipped with a cable and flashing light. Most criminals cannot tell the difference between a real and fake camera.

3.) Keep all entrances and garages well-lit at night.

4.) Do not advertise that you are away

5.) A wide-angle door viewer allows you to view callers before you open the door

6.) Never open a door to strangers without credentials. Teach your children this step.

7.) Because burglars can operate on a person’s routine, it is important to change your routine frequently.

8.) Do not keep large amounts of money in your home. Mark valuable items for identification

9.) Keep valuables in a safety deposit box at your bank. If this is not possible, keep them locked in a fire proof safe

Front and Back Doors

All exterior doors should be constructed using a solid hard wood or reinforced steel. A good door is useless if its frame is in poor shape. Assess the door jams. It is recommended that you install 2-1/2 to 3 inch stainless steel or nickel plated screws in all exterior door jams. Screws should be driven at least 1-3/4 inch deep into the underlying frame. Many home improvement centers sell quality door reinforcement kits. Supporting the front entrance and back entrance is an important step. Dead bolt locks are available at your local hardware store and they come with easy to follow installation instructions. Upgrading locks is essential, but remember the screws holding the lock and door hinges in place. Remove the short screws and replace them with the 3″ screws. Your door will be tightly fastened into the door frame. Upgrade the strike plate on your door jam with a much longer strike plate 10″ or 12″ and install it with 3″ screws. These screws are long enough that they will go right through the door casing and into the frame around your door.

Securing Windows

Most double hung windows have cheap locks which should be replaced by heavy duty locks. Upgrade your locks by installing dead bolt locks. Double dead bolts locks provide the best security. The safest windows are glass block. They are nearly impossible to break and cannot be opened. They are a good choice for basements or areas at or near ground level. A glass-break detector can detect the sound of breaking glass and can be installed in an area in close proximity to doors and windows. Security pins can be added to window frames to prevent easy entry by a burglar. Window locks, even high quality secure windows locks, are inexpensive and an important security requirement.

Patio and Sliding Window Doors

To prevent thieves from lifting the frame from the track, drive a few screws into the top track above where the door or window rests when closed. Don’t drive the screws all the way in. The protruding heads make it impossible to lift the door or window out of the frame. You will still be able to remove the door or window for cleaning by sliding it over to the open section.

Downstairs/Basement Areas

No matter what style of window you have in your basement, they’re always going to be difficult to secure because their location. Break resistant glass and pins or locks securing the window to the frame will definitely help. Key operated window locks are the securest method to safeguard your windows, but you must ensure that the key is kept somewhere close by and all family members must know precisely where the key it is locate in the event of a fire.

Security Alarms

Wireless do it yourself home security systems can give you a remarkable level of protection. There are many wireless do it yourself home security systems that are supplied as a basic kit. These security kits typically come with a couple of motion detectors, a couple of sensors, along with the control panel and probably a siren. These wireless do it yourself home security systems are not expensive and adding components won’t put much of a strain on the bank. Although there is variation among different makes and models of security systems, almost all work the same way. All the keypad consoles are wired to a central control box, usually located in a basement or closet. The control box contains a battery backup, phone wires and wires for a cellular backup.

Neighborhood Watch

One of the best ways to keep your home safe is to establish a neighborhood watch of neighbors to keep an eye on each other’s property for suspicious activity. Having other people monitoring your home while you’re away is one of the most efficient ways to deter intruders.

Organization is Fundamental Security

Simple changes in your home and your lifestyle can ensure that you never have to worry about break ins. Beginning with a basic do it yourself home security system is better than no protection at all. In the future, you can always add to your set-up to bring it to the level of security you and your family need.

Security alarm systems are the most effective way to keep unwanted intruders from entering your home, but even the most high-tech systems are not without their flaws. False alarms are a growing problem across the country, and police departments are reporting staggering figures that reveal the frequency of false alarms throughout the year, as well as the costs of responding to them.

An estimated 32 million security alarm systems are installed in homes and businesses nationwide. In 2002 alone, however, police in the United States responded to approximately 36 million false alarms, which amounted to an annual cost of nearly $1.8 billion. This means that between 94 and 98 percent of all alarm calls police departments are false (Sampson)!

Burglar alarms are there to protect you from just that—burglars—but when alarms are being falsely sounded, it not only drains the resources of your local police department (which could be attending to actual emergencies), but it could also drain your wallet.

Recently, New Haven, Connecticut has taken extra precautions in their fight to crackdown on false-alarms, and they’re now including hefty fines. Beginning in February, every resident with a security alarm system will need to have it registered at their local police department, while repeat false-alarm offenders will be required to pay a $75 dollar fine for their second offense, $150 for their third, an astounding $250 for their fourth, and increasingly higher fees for further offenses (MacMillan).

These fines certainly seem high, but as 96 percent of the 10,000 – 12,000 security alarms going off in New Haven every year are reported false, there’s no question that—especially given our current economic atmosphere—something must be done.

If you have a security alarm system installed in your home, chances are you will experience a false alarm at some point. It’s inevitable. But there are certain things you can do to minimize those chances:

1)Batteries
It’s true that the batteries in alarm systems tend to have a relatively long life-span—but they still need changing! Faulty batteries are one of the main reasons for false alarms, and you should change them every 6 months or so.

2)Pet Movement
If you have dogs or cats in your home, beware!—they could be tipping off your motion sensors. There are a variety of pet-immune motion sensors on the market that will prevent your animals from setting false alarms. If none are readily available for you, there are noise detectors that will sound at the breaking of glass or any other loud noise rather than movement.

3)Faulty Contacts
Home security systems operate through contacts on your doors and windows. When someone opens or breaks in while the system is armed, the alarm sounds. But if the contacts are faulty or loose, they might trigger the alarm even when no one has touched them. You should have a technician come out and make sure they are operating correctly.

4)Air Vents
You should always make sure that all motion sensors are facing away from air vents, windows or ceiling fans. Some motion sensors are so sensitive that even a light breeze can set them off. Or, pay the extra buck to get a decent quality motion sensor!

5)People
Communicate with the people you live with! Sometimes people arm their systems when other members of the household haven’t come home yet, and when they do it takes a while for them to get to the keypad in time to shut it down. Always let the people you live with know when you’re going to arm your system (Thompson).
