During the summer, the use of fire in parks and other public areas is prohibited in some parts of Australia and America as they are the major causes of bushfire. Many times we’ve seen through the television hundreds of homes being destroyed in fire that started from a campsite. Then again, fire can easily breakout without warning in your home. As such, the only way through which you can prevent losses in case of a fire outbreak is to install a fire alarm.

Illustrated herein, are the benefits you stand to gain by purchasing and fixing a fire alarm:

Safety

The main reason of installing a fire alarm in your home is to ensure the safety of your household. Fire alarms such as smoke detectors will warn you in good time of a likely fire outbreak, thus providing you with ample time to evacuate the house. In addition it will enable you to evacuate the house in good time hence avoiding injuries. Smoke detectors will also enable you to identify the source of the fire. Consequently, you will be able to combat it in good time before it can spread to other rooms in the house. If your fire alarm system is connected to the local fire department, they will be intimated immediately.

Reduced insurance premiums

One way through which you can minimize the money paid in insurance premiums for your house is to install a fire alarm. To the insurance company, it shows that you are concerned about a likely fire outbreak and would be able to deal with it. Therefore, you will automatically qualify for insurance discount thus saving you a lot of money.

Increased market value of your house

Installing fire alarm in your house increases the market value of your house by a significant margin. The $300.00 you spend in acquiring the fire alarm can easily translate to an additional $10,000.00 when your house comes into the market. The prospective buyer will be impressed by the fact that you went an extra mile to ensure that the house is safeguarded from a likely fire outbreak and will be more than willing to pay for that extra accessory.

Peace of mind

The greatest benefit that you stand to gain by installing a fire alarm is the peace of mind gained. Having the knowledge that you home is safeguarded against a fire outbreak will enable you to go about your personal businesses while away from home. In addition, you won’t have to worry about the safety of the persons or assets in your house since you know that the fire department will come to their rescue a few moments after the fire alarm has been sounded.

While it is important to install a fire alarm, you also need to take certain measures so as to make your house fire proof.

When taking basic steps to make a home or business safer, many people probably consider smoke detectors, which are standard pieces of safety equipment that have proven effective in alerting people to the presence of fire –and which can be used to trigger fire-fighting mechanisms, as well. Unfortunately, smoke detectors are also associated with false alarms and sometimes bulky security costs, issues that may lead some property owners to question whether purchasing and installing these devices is truly necessary. While personal preferences and the specific needs of buildings and locations are bound to vary, there are some items that can always lead to better safety and a high level of responsibility, and smoke detectors are certainly among them. By considering how smoke detectors can be of assistance to families and businesses and also exploring proper detector purchasing and placement protocols, homeowners can take full advantage of these potentially life-saving devices.

Most individual smoke detectors for home use alert users to the presence of fire through a loud alarm, possibly accompanied by flashing lights. While these detectors may operate in a variety of ways, those available for purchase have likely passed a number of standards intended to ensure that the presence of fire is conveyed as quickly as possible. For this reason, some people may find that smoke detectors are quick to sound off over minor issues such as burnt toast or a cigarette smoked indoors. These false alarms can cause a slight annoyance as many models require the removal of a unit’s battery in order to cease emitting sound and light. Still, the ability to know as soon as possible about a life-threatening blaze is well worth the occasional false alarm. In fact, many parts of the world require that apartment buildings and even individual homes install smoke detectors to help prevent damage and injury.

Smoke detectors are also highly useful in commercial settings, and are typically listed as mandatory safety items; business owners may find themselves fined or restricted if an inspection shows poor detector placement or a lack of units. Commercial smoke alarms typically differ from basic home units in their overall design as well as their ability to be integrated into a larger fire safety system. When such models are activated, they may turn on local or facility-wide sprinklers or other types of fire extinguishing tools, helping to respond to any blazes as quickly as possible. In certain high-priority environments, such as rooms that contain important documents or expensive computer equipment, specialized air-sampling smoke detectors may be installed, allowing for nearly instant response to fires.

No matter where a fire occurs, knowing about it as soon as possible is essential for activating evacuation plans and allowing firefighters plenty of time to extinguish flames before they cause serious damage. Property owners in search of quality smoke detector equipment may wonder which brands or models are best, and while such choices can seem a little arbitrary, there are many points’ shoppers can take into account to improve their chances of a smart purchase. One of the most important attributes of any smoke detector is its ability to meet the standards of well-known and accepted agencies, such as Underwriters Laboratories. Adherence to such standards should be described up-front on the detector’s packaging; units that lack this information are likely not worth buying, even if the purchase price is particularly attractive.

Along with a product’s standards, buyers should consider the overall reputation of the manufacturer before purchase. Brands that are completely foreign or which have received negative reviews from users and agencies may be lower priced or seem like perfectly suitable units, but there’s no reason to depend on a company unable to win the favor of its customers and the respect of its peers, especially when lives may be at stake. Through diligently examining the important aspects of smoke detectors before they’re bought, property owners can get the most out of their units while also gaining a considerable improvement in peace of mind.

Though the specific requirements for smoke alarm placement can vary between different types of properties and different locations, basic placement principles apply to most areas in which people live, work, and play. As a general rule, smoke detectors should be present on each floor of a building, and should also be placed inside any bedrooms of a home or particularly susceptible areas such as commercial kitchens. Checking with a local fire marshal’s office about the proper detector arrangement for a given property is often a good idea; authorities can usually also consult about any particular risks a property may face, and can advise on other fire safety measures and products. When detectors are purchased wisely and placed throughout a property with care, they can be invaluable tools for avoiding death and disaster.

Have you planned at least two ways to get out of every room in your home?

At home we have a number of electrical gadgets working on electricity and any moment there can be a short circuit. We also work with fire when cooking on a flame or even the fireplace. So fire can break out any moment. So it is logical that you have an escape route with fire exits in case of an emergency.

Every room in the house must have two exits. In case one cannot be opened, try another. Feel the door with your hand. If it feels hot you must know that there is fire outside. In that case use a different exit. Often we block one of the exits with furniture and make it inaccessible. Keep all the doors free from clutter and in working condition.

There must be multiple exits to your house in different sides of the building. This will ensure your safe exit. Sometimes the flames rise through the windows and accessing the door close to it will jeopardy the security. Also the outlets to the house must not have too many plug points and electrical wires close to it.

Have a full proof escape plan before hand and test the efficiency of such a plan. You can also have somebody to instruct and guide you. Record the time taken by you to escape in normal situations. This will help you the efficiency of different exits.

Children are most vulnerable in case of fire because they cannot gauge the seriousness of the situation. Small children should not be left unattended ever in a room. The children’s room must have an exit to the parent’s room. If that is not possible, let children have rooms close to yours.

Familiarize children with the various exits so that they may even leave without adult supervision. When a fire breaks out there may not be enough time to reach the parents. Tell them to leave independently. Practice this with your children at least once in every six months so that they remember. Fix a meeting place where each member should gather after the escape.

The fire exits should be properly labeled. The color code of an emergency sign is red. If you have big houses do remember to put arrows to denote fire exits. Children should be able to see these signs easily. In case of fire the room may be full of smoke and cut out vision. So it will be advisable to have arrows near the floor in the walls.

Practice drills that are associated in case of fire. If the room is full of smoke, crawl and reach for the fire exit. Drills such as Stop, Drop and Roll are essential in case your clothes catch fire. Windows can also help in coming out provided you practice beforehand to leave through it.

Do have smoke detectors in the house for while asleep you may not notice a fire. In case you live in multi storied building check for ladders associated with the windows. This you can also store some ropes near the fire exit, just in case you need them.

It has become a common workplace procedure to have firefighting devices installed within the office so as to minimize damages caused by fire accidents. Corporate organizations as well as small and medium sized businesses are increasingly investing in firefighting safety equipment and policies so as to give their employees and clients visiting the premise a peace of mind. Fire hazard prevention is something that should not be taken lightly.

Therefore, if you are looking for information on how to prevent fire hazards in the office, you will find this article quite an interesting read. To find out more, keep reading to the end of the article.

Discussed herein, are safety measures which every business owner regardless of their size ought to put in place so as to guarantee the security and lives of those working and visiting the premises:

Fire extinguishers

The most basic firefighting equipment which every office needs to have installed in various locations in the office is a fire extinguisher. Just like any other type of office equipment, fire extinguishers are easily available in the market. Fire extinguishers are basically designed with an aim of helping office workers put off or manage flames before the fire brigade arrives. It is important that fire extinguishers be installed in locations where they can easily be reached by everyone and all personnel in the office trained on how to use the fire extinguishers.

The fire extinguisher purchased and installed in the office will hinge on the nature of work you are involved in. electric fire is different from chemical fire. As such, make sure that you have the right type of extinguisher installed in the office.

Electric fires

The office is filled with different types of electronic devices that ranges from computers, printers, shredders and air conditioner to microwaves used in the kitchen. Consequently, there is always the danger of electric fire. Every employee should follow the safety guidelines and instructions when using these electronic gadgets so as to minimize the likelihood of accidents. In case there are electronics such as printers and photocopiers that are not being used, they should be switched off and the mains supply disconnected. Do not leave computers in standby modes as they are still using electric power in that state.

Smoke detectors

The only way through which you can effectively fight fire is by identifying it when it happens. Hence, every office should invest in smoke detectors. Smoke detectors will immediately sound an alarm once smoke has been detected.

Make sure that the smoke detectors are well maintained. Replace the batteries once every six months. The batteries should not be removed for whatever reason.

Clutter

To help minimize the spread of flames in case of a fire outbreak, make sure there are no clutters such as printing papers, magazines and newspapers lying all over the office. Hire a helping hand whose work is to ensure that the office is well maintained and kept tidy throughout.

Whether it’s an office owned by you or you work there, fire is going to cost a lot. Not only financially by putting you out of job or costing you a fortune, your co-workers or employees can get badly injured or even killed. It has been estimated that 25% of businesses affected by serious fire are likely to go out of business. Therefore, it’s the responsibility of all the workers to protect their office against fire.

Prevention

The first and most important step towards fire safety is the prevention of it.

Smoke only where allowed and use ashtrays, don’t throw them on the floor.

Keep passages and exits clean, don’t store anything or keep waste at these places.

Allocate an employee to check all electrical appliances are switched off before closing the office.

Have an electrician who checks for faults frequently and solves them as soon as they arise.

Throw away papers and other combustible materials at proper place, away from burners and electronic devices.

Adequate air circulation around appliances that get heated should be maintained.

Exit doors and escape stairs should not be locked during office hours.

Never overload extension boards. If you see smoke or get smell of burning, turn it off immediately and get it repaired before reusing it.

Regularly check protection equipments for faults and contact appropriate person to replace/repair the faulty piece.

Plan in Advance

Sometimes prevention falls short and unfortunately fire breaks out. In preparation for such a situation, workers should go through fire drills regularly to know how to face it and the actions that need to be taken. Some things to keep in mind are:

Quickest exit route of the building.

How to use fire protection equipments.

Location of nearest alarm and how it works.

Have emergency numbers on every desk.

Have a detailed evacuation plan that is given to every employee. Mention disabled people and the unique steps that need to be followed for their safety.

Designate a gathering place where workers are to go in case of an emergency.

If fire breaks out:

Switch on the alarm immediately and call fire department even if fire is small.

Attempt to fight small fire only using proper equipments and if you know how to use it, else leave it to others who know.

If there’s too much smoke, crawl low to escape as smoke is less near the floor.

In case too much fire spreads, close doors and leave. Closed doors will not let fire and smoke to spread rapidly.

Never use elevators.

Cut off the power supply if it is still on.

Test if door is hot before opening; use back of the hand for this. Proceed with caution if and only if the door is cold.

After coming outside record your name in the designated gathering point and wait for further instructions.

Protection starts from you and all individuals doing their bit will contribute towards a safer workplace.

It has become common for modern business premises to have fire fighting devices installed as a means of preventing and fighting fire. Business owners and corporate organization managers are putting fire safety policies and procedures in place at their workplace and educating their employees on the same. It ensures that not only the business is secured but also employees and client lives are protected in case of fire outbreak. There have been instances where businesses have been razed to the ground and lives lost as a result of failing to adhere to fire codes.

The article aims at providing safety measures which businesses needs to put in place to ensure the safety of lives and property in general.

The most basic fire safety precaution which you need to have in place is fire extinguishers. These are readily available for sale from leading suppliers and can assist in case of fire breakout before the fire brigade arrives. These should be installed at specific points on the business premise where they are accessible to any person. However, there are different types of fire extinguishers and knowing the difference between each that is in the market is of significance. Each fire extinguisher has been designed to fight a specific fire. The different grades of fire extinguishers are class A, B, C, D and K fire extinguishers. Knowing what each has been designed for will help greatly in trying to put out fire quickly. Employees must be taught to distinguish between the different types of extinguishers and must be trained in how to use them.

Secondly, when there are electronic appliances in the office, i.e. computers, microwave and coffee maker amongst others, it is important to note that they are likely to catch fire. This every employee needs to be aware of and apply all the necessary safety measures. As such, when not using electronic devices, you are strongly urged to turn them off when not using them. In addition, they need to plug off these devices from the mains power supply as there are scenarios where the device may be off but there is still electric current flowing in them. This especially applies to devices that are usually on standby mode.

Thirdly, it is important for the business premise to have smoke detectors installed in every room. Nobody, really ever knows where fire normally breaks out and having a smoke detector will greatly help in identifying the source of the fire and putting it off immediately. Ensure that smoke detectors are well maintained and working conditions checked regularly to ensure that they are working properly. To do so, have the batteries replaced every six months.

Fourthly, there needs to be clear fire exit signs. These needs to an alternate route other than the ones used on a day to day basis.

Last but not least, fire safety starts with the employees. It is upon the business entrepreneur to educate their employees on fire safety procedures. For instance, you there needs to be occasional fire drills to check if employees are well averse with fire fighting safety.

The safety of employees in any office is very important. It is also essential that every employee is aware of all the safety rules and regulations to be followed in an emergency because this would definitely help them to handle the emergency smoothly and may be even prevent personal injuries. The first thing the employees should follow is evacuate the building as fast as possible. For this to happen smoothly there must exit routes installed at key locations in the building.

Exit routes are basically an unobstructed path from any point in a building or an office to a place of safety. These route are permanent places in any office and would lead directly to a safety place within the building or outside in open space. Exit routes are large and strong enough to accommodate many employees at the same time.

Exit routes should be installed at every key location in the office building ensuring the evacuation of maximum people in a very short time. This is very important for the proper functioning of any emergency route. These routes should be well ventilated and should have basic safety gear available at many places in the route. A first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, an axe, oxygen masks and other basic safety gear should be available on these routes as this would help the employees in emergencies and would play an important role in saving their lives or prevent them from getting injured. Exit route maps should be posted in every office room or floor and safety drills should be conducted regularly to see the alertness of the employees.

The ceilings of these emergency routes should be at least 8 feet to 10 feet high. They should be wide enough to accommodate 12-15 people to pass through the door at one single time. The exit doors in the exit route should be separated by fire resistant materials. These routes should have proper lighting so that employees with normal vision don’t face any problems with the visibility.

There must be proper signs along the exit access showing the directions and other safety procedures to be followed. Line of sight to exist sign should be clear and be visible at all times. The letter on these signs should be clearly readable and the bright color paints should be used to on these signs as they are visible even in night. The fire-resistant paint and solutions should be renewed time to time so as to maintain the fire-resistant properties. The emergency supplies in these exit routes should also be renewed and replaced time to time.

The employees too should take some responsibility and do proper inspection of these exit routes and report to the concerned authority in case of any problem. Fire alarms should be installed and the building should conduct practice drills regularly. Proper checks should be conducted of all of wires in a building as they are a leading cause for fires. Lastly, insurance is essential because it always helps in any emergency.

Safety at workplace is a very important criterion which should never be ignored even a bit. In case of any emergency, exit procedures should be easy accessible and well-marked. In spite of several measures being taken to avoid accidents, fully stopping accidents from occurring is very difficult as humans are involved in various works. The planning of a big complex building should take sufficient care to design the exits, because it is one of the primary areas of concern.

A workplace emergency can occur due to various unforeseen reasons ranging from natural disasters, technological problems, medical situations and also human reasons. The first thing to do in a situation endangering life is the proper exit path. To design proper exit routes, we should access the whole workplace, estimate the total number of people working, minimum number of exits required, portable fire extinguishers, alarming systems,

There are many advantages of using proper emergency exit systems.

Life of a human being is of utmost priority when an emergency situation occurs. In case of crisis, a few seconds delay may end a person’s life. So exits should be designed in such ways that, complex medical help, such as stretchers, and other necessary equipment can be brought into the workplace at places where the situation occurs.

Proper safety measures mean lesser compensation to workers and employees, which is actually in turn a saving for the company. Increased safety lessens fatalities and enables faster external help when fighting a problematic situation. A company spends a huge amount of money to compensate the people who were hurt during the work hours. Saving that not only saves money, but also valuable time.

It also increases the moral and ethical standards as well as gives a comparatively safer workplace. People always want to work in places where there are lesser chances of getting hurt. Planning good exit strategies, encourages and boosts the employee and gives him a satisfaction at the workplace.

Predetermined course of action in case of emergency situations keep things organized, and helps in faster determining the strategy to counteract the problem. The management should take care that regular emergency drills are performed and people are made aware of the most common type of accidents that happen. This helps them to better cope up with any situation.

In fact there are no alternatives to designing good, planned exits in case of emergencies. It is very important and should never be neglected.

Office is a place which houses all your important meetings and stores your necessary documents. Office is the place where one spends most of his or her day time. Taking care of it is very important. Your daily business transactions take place there. If it caught fire you would have a severe loss and have to even bear an extra burden of redecorating and reallocating all your departments. It should be maintained properly and it should be secure. What if your office catches a fire? What would you do then? All your important papers, files, machines would get burnt in the fire. It would damage your office and destroy everything. You need to take necessary precaution to prevent your office from burning down in a fire.

A fire burns everything and all it leaves behind is ashes. Everyone should be prepared to tackle a fire so that one can save the maximum valuables and stop the fire.

The following steps can be taken in order to protect oneself in case of an office fire:

Firstly take care of the small things like reduce the use of adapters and make provisions for sockets and overloaded sockets are also one of the causes for office fire. The cables in your office shouldn’t be connected by taped joints as they lack adequate amount of insulation and have less mechanical solidity. Any cable upon damage should be completely replaced and this must be done by a professional. The partially burnt out wires are also a source of fire in an office. Always keep check of any spoilt plug points or leakage and make sure to get them repaired. Equipments that cannot be checked visually should always have a routine check by service personnel. Always power off any equipment after use or even while cleaning it. Ensure that your colleagues are aware of the guidelines and motivate them too register any faults in the electric appliances or other electrical faults.

In case of a fire, do not go haywire whatever happens. Remain calm and composed and think of escaping the office. Always make a point to familiarize yourself with the fire exits and even make your fellowmen aware of the same. You must have a fire extinguisher at your workplace and never make use of water as it worsens the situation. Do not keep waste papers thrown here and there in the office as these would serve as fire carriers when your office catches a fire.

Smoking in the office should be avoided until and unless special room isn’t provided for that purpose as a small lighted cigarette can start a huge fire. Hence always make sure the cigarette is completely put off before disposing it. Keep your office tidy in order to spot any small fire and stop it before it engulfs the entire office. Before shutting the office always have a safety check of all the corners and appliances and switch everything off.

It is always better to prevent a fire from occurring as it damages everything and they can’t be revived back.

Fire accidents are one of the most common causes of death in accidents that occur at home. Every year, the number of fire victims keeps on increasing especially during hot weathers. Many ordinances are already passed and were set up in many countries to decrease the rate of increase of fire accidents but still the number of families being affected by fire accidents each year is just fatal. The boom in technology may be one of the reasons for this alarm. People are just vulnerable to threats of fire accidents because of the increasing demand in technology nowadays. People are always using electrical appliances; various chemicals are now being used in the household and many of such chemicals are susceptible to fire – these are just few examples of how people become at risk in fire accidents.

Reducing the risk of fires can be done by modifying certain areas at home. The safety precautions that can be taken on each household can help save lives and properties. Reduction risks can be done in a wide array of activities that ranges from very simple to very complex. Here are some notes to consider in helping reduce the risk of fire accidents starting from the most complex to the simplest:

House Designs

Nothing beats a house specifically designed to fight a fire. A house with a fire emergency exit and a smoke detector system (or a fire alarm system) can really help eliminate fire risks. Walls which are fire-proof are now being used in newly-built houses. Good water-proofing designs can also be considered such that switches leading to the wirings will not get wet easily. The said risk reduction measures are very costly but can be very effective.

Safe Electrical Equipment

In recent years, the number of fire accidents of which the cause is faulty electrical wirings is increasing. It even surpasses the number of fire accidents of which the cause is cooking accidents. A good design on the electrical wirings will be the key to eliminate faults on such. Why design a wiring which would not eventually carry the heat generated by electricity. It is recommended to consult an Electrical Engineer for the good design of electrical wirings.

Fire Fighting Equipment

If the house is already built but the design of it permits high vulnerability to fire, then one might consider having firefighting equipment like fire extinguishers, sand bags and the like at home. This equipment must be placed on a conspicuous place at home so that people will be able to see it once the need arises.

Being diligent at home

Keeping away flammable materials like kerosene, petrol and other chemicals for various needs may decrease fire risks. These materials should be placed on a safe place at home which is far from open sources of flame. Also, keeping cooking fires enclosed when not in use can also help eliminate danger of fire accidents.

In the end, our vulnerability to fire accidents will always be present on our everyday lives. But we have a lot of ways on how to somehow decrease the possibility of it to happen.

Being fire safety conscious is important all your round but during the winter months it is especially more of the essence. Few things can compare to family time spent in front of a cozy fireplace or reading a good book, enjoying a good glass of wine while the pleasant heat of a fireplace encircles you with the ice cold winter weather only a vague reality. Neglecting on fireplace safety can turn this adoring picture into a nightmare.

A good place to start your fireplace safety check is on the overall maintenance of your fireplace before the winter starts. An annual general maintenance check is highly recommended. Chimney specialists will do a proper check to make sure that the chimney lining, bricks, and mortar are all in tact and that there are no structural problems to attend to. If any, it is important to have it repaired before setting the first fire of the winter.

Another thing to do just before the winter is to sweep the chimney or have it done professionally to remove any obstacles and to make sure it is free from any form of creosote.

The next step before you light your fireplace is to fit new batteries to the fire alarm system and to do a test first. Remember to notify your monitoring company before you do the fire alarm test to prevent getting a fine for a false alarm. In addition, make sure you have an ABC fire extinguisher close to the fireplace.

Install a fireplace screen that can cover the entire opening of the fireplace. This will help to prevent fire sparks from dashing out. Also place a grid in front of the fireplace so that logs can stay in tact and do not roll out.

Keep all combustible materials and any other type of materials that can catch fire easy away from the fireplace. A good measure is to keep all furniture, firewood, carpets, blankets, and bedding at least three feet away.

Never use too many wood at once. Only use enough firewood to maintain a moderate fire to warm the area. Roaring fires can cause the creosote in the chimney to catch fire and result in a chimney fire.

Never use flammable liquids such as gasoline to stir up or restart a fire. Flammable liquids normally produce vapors that can easily explode with serious injuries or start a full scale blast.

Always keep an eye on children and prevent them from coming close to the fireplace. Where there are infants and toddlers in the house, fitting special fireplace gates to increase the reachable distance from the fireplace is strongly recommended.

Never leave a fireplace burning through the night. Always put the fire out before you go to bed and make sure that it is completely out.

An insurance cover helps to mitigate losses in an easy manner in case of any untoward incident. A fire insurance cover helps to provide proper reimbursement to the victims for the damages that they may have experienced in the event of a fire. This type of insurance can be taken against any property be it commercial or residential. A fixed premium is estimated by the insurance company depending on the amount of risks involved and the likelihood of a fire occurring and after this assessment has been made, the monthly amount to be paid is determined. The owners of a house where there are fire extinguishers and water sprinklers installed will definitely have to pay a reduced premium amount.

Many people may be of the belief that they do not really need to go in for a fire insurance policy. However, one cannot be sure of when their home may be engulfed by fire as it can occur suddenly and without warning. Some of the reasons why you should get yourself insured against this eventuality have been enumerated below:

If you live in a region that experiences hot and dry weather for a certain part of the year, your property can highly be at risk of getting burnt. This risk becomes even more profound if there are woods or clumps of trees along with dry grass in the areas surrounding your house. In extremely hot conditions, these woods can simply catch fire and this fire may spread to your home especially if there are strong winds. You should consider getting yourself insured in such a case.

You may be of the opinion that you are quite cautious and your home just cannot catch fire but this is a completely wrong notion as a fire can be caused even due to a small, fallen match stick or a burnt cigarette thrown unmindfully into the bushes of your garden. If you have kids in your house, they could accidentally trigger off a fire while playing with candles or lighting fire-crackers during the holiday season. So, you should have your house insured against a fire.

If your house gets completely burned down from a fire, you may be in a hassling situation regarding where to put up until everything gets sorted out and you have a chance to rebuild the burnt structure. If you have fire insurance in this case, you can get a certain amount of money to pay your rent until your living accommodations have been arranged. Thus this helps solve the problem of where to put up until things get sorted out.

If you own a commercial property or retail store where there are immensely valuable items stored at all times, it is best to get insured against the risk of fire as you can be in for huge financial losses and lose everything that you own and face a business collapse in case of a fire. On the other hand, if you have fire insurance, you will be covered for all the monetary losses that you have incurred.

If at least one of these points is true for your situation, you should consider getting fire insurance for your property as it can help save a lot of money In the long run.

Did you know that smoke detectors can literally save your life and that of your family if a fire should happen at your home? Many people understand this, but they assume that a fire won't happen at their home, so they don't do anything about it.

Detecting a disaster in its early stage can of course, prevent the disaster. This is what smoke detectors are designed for. This equipment will make your fire alarm mechanism to go off once it senses smoke. A majority of detectors in homes and offices in the present age have an inbuilt alarm system that is automatically triggered as soon as it senses smoke.

Installing a smoke detector in homes or offices comes with a lot of advantages. Once you install smoke detectors you have to make certain that they are in a good working condition all the time. A majority of smoke detectors makes use of batteries. Due to this, it is up to you to check on a regular basis that they are still working. Run it once or twice at least in a month just to make certain that they are still in working condition.

Discussed below are some of the benefits of installing smoke detectors in homes and offices:

You have the ability to react to the alarm as soon as you hear it. This will enable you to contain the fire from engulfing the whole office or home. Smoke detectors in homes and offices will direct you to the exact area where the smoke has been identified. This will make it possible to get hold of a fire extinguisher so that you can put off the flames.

When managing fire, you have to take extra precautions against your decision. Will you be in a position to put out the fire with the equipment that you have or will it be okay to allow the right body, i.e. fire fighters to deal with it?

Smoke detectors in homes and offices will alert every person in the house or office immediately. This is one of the chief aims of installing smoke detectors in homes and offices. It should work in alerting every person in the house or office about the possibility of fire. There are also equipments that you can install to link with the local fire fighting unit so that they can react quickly the moment the fire alarm goes off.

It provides the persons still inside the house or office with adequate time frame to get off before the fire spreads. As stated earlier, early detection is of uttermost importance.

Whereas, some folks might think of this as an extra cost, think of it as an investment that will save you millions of dollars of what you have struggled to build over the years only to go up in flames in a matter of minutes.

While smoke detectors are more sensitive when it comes to detecting smoke, heat detectors are more sensitive to temperature. More specifically - a heat detector will trigger when the temperature near the device reaches a certain level, but will not trigger due to smoke alone.

There is a proverbial saying, ‘fire is a good servant but a bad master’. Many are the times when a majority of us have found ourselves at the receiving end of fire. However, it is possible to avert such disasters by taking adequate measures.

Discussed herein are top ten fire safety tips that you can practice to protect your home or business premise from unforetold loses due to fire breakouts.

Installation of smoke detectors: Where there is smoke, there is fire. This is a true saying in the literal terms. Smoke detectors have been specially designed to alert you of potential fire outbreaks. These should be installed in every room of the home or business premises. The instructions provided therein by the manufacturers should be strictly adhered to. Test these atleast once every fortnight. The batteries should be swapped biannually. Never remove the batteries for other home or office use.

Carefully space space heaters: Its common place for most homes and offices to have portable space heaters. These should be kept at fase distant from flammable materials such as papers, mattresses, curtains and flammable fluids. When not using a room, never leave a heater on.

Keep matches away: Thanks to technological development, most equipment such as gas cookers and fire places do not need matches to light. However, matches are still kept in homes for various reasons. These should be kept at a safe distance from children. In addition, it is vital to educate children on the dangers of lighting matches for fun.

First aid tip for burns: It is of essence for everybody in the household to know first aid measures related to burns. When someone gets accidentally burnt, it is vital that the wound is cooled with cold running water for atleast 15 minutes. This helps in relieving the pain. If you notice blisters on the area, seek the assistance of a doctor immediately.

Escaping a room full of smoke: When trying to escape a room engulfed with smoke, try to seek for alternate routes. While in the process, it is important to protect yourself from choking. Crawl through the room on your hands and knees as cool and clean air can be found a few inches from the floor.

Startegise escape routes: When a fire breaks out, the first thing is to get out as fast as you can. Have atleast two ways through which you can exit the house. Never opt for elevators as the quick means out of a building. A fire meeting point on the outside of the house should be chosen where every household member can gather.

Keep cooking areas clean: The kitchen is the main source of fire for any home. These areas should be cleared of any flammable material. To keep children from knocking cooking pots over them, keep the handles on the inside of the stove.

Safe use of electricity: Electrical fire are the most hard to put off. When an electronic is not in use, ensure that it is unplugged. Where a smell of burning rubber is detected, switch off the mains supply and account for all electrical cords.

Clothes on fire: If your clothes happen to catch fire, do not run but drop and roll on the ground. This helps in smothering the flames.

10. Candle safety: Candles are being increasingly used as decors in home. As a result there are more and more candle related fires. Never ever light a candle and leave it unattended. In addition, don’t fall asleep while candles are burning.

One of the most common causes of dryer fires is lack of maintenance. When lint traps aren’t cleaned as often as they should be, the resulting build-up in the screen or other areas can cause the dryer to perform poorly, operate at elevated temperatures and possibly overheat. UL recommends that vent systems be checked and cleaned to maintain proper air flow for the same reasons. Problems may also occur if consumers place improper items in their dryers, such as foam backed rugs or athletic shoes, or vent their appliances with plastic or vinyl exhaust materials.

UL says you should make sure that your dryer has rigid or flexible metal venting and ducting materials to help sustain airflow. This will also reduce operating costs and extend the life of the dryer and clothing due to lower drying temperatures. In addition, homeowners can clean the lint trap before and after drying each load of clothes. Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can be trapped. Furthermore, the interior of the dryer and venting system should be cleaned periodically by qualified service people. You should also replace plastic or vinyl exhaust hoses with rigid or flexible metal venting.
